PostPosted: Fri Jan 05, 2007 5:17 pm    Post subject: Possible Comcast Routing Problem - Washington State Reply with quote Back to top

Hi there,

Necessary Info:
1. Your location - Woodinville, WA
2. Your ISP name and type: Comcast Cable
3. Upload and download speeds - Download: 3mb, Upload: 365k (avg)
4. Modem make and model - Motorola Surfboard 5100
5. Type of Vonage adapter used: RT31P2
6. Setup of Network: Surfboard---->RT31P2-->Belkin Pre-N Wireless Router ----> Powerbook/PC's
7. Issue you are experiencing: Low Quality of Service
8. Run this Voip Test - At work so I'll have to do later. Have run it four or five times. Everything is green except for qos. 60% packet loss when in above connection.
--------------

I'm fairly sure my problem is with Comcast. Had Comcast tech come out and verify (and say) that my setup and line signal/quality were fine, had no filtering issues or problems. Talked to online tech, who had me ping their DNS and gateway servers with no problems.

Traceroutes both to and from my house showed packet loss at the first three hops, and packet loss if I were trying to get to any comcast domain. I don't have the information here at work with me, but I can post later.

If the first three hops to a server are showing delays, wouldn't that mean that there's a configuration issue with Comcast servers?

Note: All tests above were done with the following configuration: Cable Modem ----> Desktop PC running Windows XP. So the Vonage and Wireless routers weren't part of the testing equation.

When you get home, please re-run the test and post the detailed results. Also run a comparison test at www.testyourvoip.com (test call to Boston) and post those results. Then re-establish the full setup and re-run the forum test. Are the results notably different? If so, post those.

Hi Steve,

Here's the test results you were looking for. The following are with all three devices hooked up (modem, linksys Voip router, and wireless router)

Speed test statistics
---------------------
Download speed: 1845888 bps
Upload speed: 364480 bps
Quality of service: 34 %
Download test type: socket
Upload test type: socket
Maximum download pause: 202 ms
Average download pause: 18 ms
Minimum round trip time to server: 82 ms
Average round trip time to server: 126 ms

Voip test statistics
--------------------
Jitter: you --> server: 4.2 ms
Jitter: server --> you: 8.6 ms
Packet loss: you --> server: 64.2 %
Packet loss: server --> you: 64.1 %
Packet discards: 0.0 %
Packets out of order: 0.0 %
Number of supported Voip lines: 6
Estimated MOS score: 3.2

------

The testyourvoip.com site failed its test. Probably a firewall issue but I don't have the personal bandwidth to check.

Pingplotter Test Image with PC Desktop hooked directly into the modem. This ran for about fifteen minutes:

Tracert info with full setup. The only thing different from this with PC/Modem hooked up directly is the first hop (it doesn't show):

Your packet losses are enormous. Plug the PC directly into the RT31P2 and re-run the forum test. If the packet losses go way down, then the problem is with the Belkin (assuming that the test you posted repeats). If the packet losses are still high, then plug the PC directly into the modem and repeat. If the losses go way down, then the problem is in the RT31P2. If they don't, then the problem is with your ISP.

By the way, are you running any internet intensive things on the PC when you get these results?

i'm not sure if i agree. looking over the tracert, sometimes certain hops discard Incoming pings, so that could be why he's getting blocked.

basically with the tracert it's really only good to see certain hops bad

for example

25 25 25
30 30 30
290 290 290
40 40 40

obviously there's something wrong on that 3rd hop, etc.

You're probably right. If so, the poor test results should persist with the PC plugged into the modem, and we'll know that it's not the Belkin or Linksys.

are you actually having problems with your connection, or are you just worried at your low qos? basically, i would try removing that n router from the network, that's new technology and i dont know how well they would play with the relatively dumb Vonage devices

Hi Steve,

I'll come back with some more data either later tonight or tomorrow morning. I'll have to wait till everyone in the family's off the connection so that there's no interference.

For reference, the desktop PC has nothing running on it beyond the tests and the traceroutes.

Also, the graphic I originally posted from PingPlotter was with the PC plugged directly into the cable modem.

Anyway, will come back with more data to analyze later. Just wanted to convey appreciation while I had a break.
