I am having the same problems. I can hear the people on the other end fine, but they hear me all choppy. I know it's because I do a Iot of downloading/uploading (it's how my husband and I watch most of our tv). I was wondering how I find the QoS option. I can't find it anywhere. I have a Motorola SB5100 cable modem and the Motorola VT2442 VC from Vonage.
Incase you need to know my tests (with uTorrent off) at http://speedtest.vonage.com/index.html were: download speed - 6.64 Mbps T2, 6.312 Mpbs upload speed - 1.09 Mbps DSL/T1, 1500 kbps
and from http://www.testyourvoip.com/details.html?id=01W82A were: Media Quality MOS 4.3 / 5.0(Best with G.711 is 4.4) Degradation Sources Codec 0.57 79.5% Latency 0.00 0.0% Packet Discards 0.15 20.5% Packet Loss 0.00 0.0% Codec G.711 (PCM at 64kbps, 20ms RTP payload, 80kbps IP BW) Round-Trip Latency 106 ms Packet Discards 0.7% Packet Loss 0.0% Loss Periods Min: 20 ms Avg: 20 ms Max: 20 ms Random Loss Jitter Min: 0 ms Avg: 6 ms Max: 28 ms Signaling Quality Post-Dial Delay 47 ms Call Setup Time 47 ms Media Delay 140 ms MOS Analysis FROM Montreal To You
Media Quality MOS 4.4 / 5.0(Best with G.711 is 4.4) Degradation Sources Codec 0.58 100.0% Latency 0.00 0.0% Packet Discards 0.00 0.0% Packet Loss 0.00 0.0% Codec G.711 (PCM at 64kbps, 20ms RTP payload, 80kbps IP BW) Round-Trip Latency 106 ms Packet Discards 0.0% Packet Loss 0.0% Loss Periods Min: 0 ms Avg: 0 ms Max: 0 ms No Loss Jitter Min: 4 ms Avg: 6 ms Max: 12 ms Signaling Quality Post-Pickup Delay 75 ms Call Setup Time 75 ms Media Delay 109 ms
with UTorrent on my speed was:
download speed - 3.68 Mbps, cable modem 4 Mbps upload speed - 420 kbps, Satellite 400 kbps
and I'll just post the basics for this one: http://www.testyourvoip.com/details.html?id=4K7MCA upload - 3.7/5 download - 4.2/5 |

You may have to manually set the upload bandwidth in your HBB1. This corrected a problem I was experiencing |

But I don't even know what a HBB1 is, or how to set the bandwith. Edit: Never mind, you must not have been talking to me. I don't have a HBB1. I just need to find out how I find the QoS option. Also if I set it for the Motorola SB5100 cable modem or the Motorola VT2442, or both. |

I tried the QOS stuff for months and was never able to make a difference. The only thing that made a difference in my Voip was purchasing and installing a Hawking HBB1. This device is for the most part, plug and play and gives priority to Voip, something that my routers would never seem to do even though they were set to do it.
Give it a try, it is worth the $60. Purchase through Amazon and you can always send it back without any problems. |

Not all SOHO (Small Office Home Office) routers support QoS. But I think the Motorola vt2442 automatically gives priority to voice (UDP) traffic. QoS can also be set for specific LAN IP addresses.
I believe the same is true of the Linksys Vonage router.
If you use a non-router Vonage device, set the QoS for UDP packets (not TCP) to get higher service for the Voip.
Another thing that helps is changing the voice quality (vonage.com, features, bandwidth saver). Try the lowest setting (normal voice quality) - it works fine, and requires less bandwidth.
