PostPosted: Wed Jan 03, 2007 3:19 pm    Post subject: Vtech 8100 disconnects internet on Comcast with WRT54G Reply with quote Back to top

Hi everyone -- hoping you can help me get my vonage phone working again.

I bought my phone about two weeks ago when I was still living in Erie, PA. It worked GREAT there (was using a Terayon modem - not sure what model, and Time Warner cable).

HOWEVER, we moved to TN last weekend, and just had our cable set up (Comcast) and now my vonage phone no longer works. Every time I connect it (same network setup), it causes my cable modem to lose all connectivity. I tried calling Comcast, but of course they say it's not their problem, and try to sell me on their VoIP service (more$$) instead.

Here's my details -- hopefully I didn't miss anything.....

1. Your location
Hendersonville, TN (near Nashville)

2. Your ISP name and type (cable, DSL, wireless etc)
Comcast cable internet

3. Upload and download speeds
Download speed: 3301784 bps
Upload speed: 345120 bps

4. Modem make and model
Terayon model TJ 715x cable modem

5. Type of Vonage adapter used ie RT31P2 or PAP2
Vtech Vonage Broadband Telephone System Model IP 8100-1
(this one)

6. Setup of Network
We have Comcast cable internet. The cable modem is rented from Comcast -- it's a Terayon model TJ 715x. We have a wireless router plugged in to that -- it's a Linksys WRT54G. We have one desktop computer plugged into the router and a laptop computer connected wirelessly. Both computers work fine UNTIL I connect the Vonage phone (a Vtech model IP 8100-1) -- I plug that into the back of the router and the light turns red on the vtech phone -- as SOON as the light starts to plink on the phone, the "Cable" light on the Teryon cable modem goes out, and I lose my entire internet connection

^^ I *was* using this same network setup before I moved last week (in Erie, PA with Time Warner Cable) and it worked FINE before I left Erie and moved to Hendersonville, TN and switched to Comcast.

7. Issue you are experiencing ie dropped calls, choppy audio etc
I cannot get a connection with the phone at ALL. When I plug in the power adapter on the base unit, the "Ready" light on the base unit turns red for a second, then starts blinking yellow -- however as soon as the "ready" light on the phoen starts blinking to find a connection, the "Cable" light on my Terayon cable modem goes out, and I lose all internet connectivity. I've even let it sit overnight -- the phone never gets a connection, and the cable modem never reconnects.

However, the SECOND I disconnect the power to the Vonage phone's base unit, the cable light on the cable modem blinks, and it gets its connection back and all my computers internet connection works again.

8. Run this VoIP Test:

i personaly dont care for any v-tech vonage adapter.

but, have you checked that it has dhcp is turned on(both adapter and router)

have you tried getting to work directly plugged into the cable modem? (leave the router out)

try those 2 things and let us know

Also recheck your cabling. Make sure that the WAN port of the WRT54G is the one connected to the modem and that the Vonage phone is plugged into one of the LAN ports. Check the cable itself.

If it still doesn't work, plug the Vonage phone directly into the modem. If that works, set the WRT54G back up, but temporarily disable its wireless function. See if that works.
