PostPosted: Tue Jan 02, 2007 6:51 pm    Post subject: Vonage & Hughes Net Reply with quote Back to top

I would appreciate any suggestions. We have a cabin way back in the Colorado mountains. No internet or telephone. I have installed Hughes Net and Vonage. Problem, we can hear the other party perfectly, but they cannot hear us. If I call the Vonage system with Net2Phone, we can carry on an acceptable conversation. The adapter is a Liniksys pap2.

Is there better equipment, changes to the packet size, etc. Now we receive the call on Vonage, get the number and call them back on Net2Phone.

Thanks in advance. I think that this is pretty interesting technology. I am hoping to get it working.

Thanks,

1) Change your bandwidth saver option on Vonage website to lowest setting (30Kbps)
2) Run TCP Optimizer on your PC if you have not already (link here) *this won't do anything for voice, but will help with Internet
3) Run VOIP Speed Test and post results here so we can see what your quality (or lack of) is
4) Call HughesNet support and see if they can decrease your packet size. Decreasing the packet size will allow more through in less time. Your delay may be so great that you're losing packets and would explain the loss of voice.

Generally, residential satellite products are not good for voice applications because of high packet loss. IP traffic (web browsing, downloading, etc) is more forgiving and will automatically retransmit the lost packets, but voice is real time and there is no retransmission of lost packets when dealing with voice.

Let us know if anything improves.

I hated to do this, but I have canceled my Vonage account. I had them make a note; that if the problem is ever worked out, I will sign up again for Vonage. I think that it is a great service.

Apparently, Hughes and Vonage will not work together. It would be great for me if they did.

I am still mystified why Vonage and Net2Phone would work from the same computer using Hughes. If I called Vonage with Net2Phone, I could carry on a good conversation with my son. But Vonage by itself would not work at all. I could hear the other party, but they could not hear me. Apparently, the packets were being dropped due to a latency problem. Vonage was unable to increase the time limit for me. If they had been able to increase the time limit, or if Hughes would have been able to reduce the packet size, I am sure that the combination would have worked well.

Any have any recommendations on Voip for Hughes? I have the Pro package with the bigger antenna and transceiver.

Thanks,

The physics just clobber HNS and Voip. Consider this: 23,000 miles up to the bird - 23,000 miles to the Hughes NOC - 23,000 miles back to the bird - 23,000 miles to your dish. At an optimal minimum that;s 96,000 / 186,00 (miles per second) results in physics based latency of about 500 millisecs - add to that network overhead and the round trip time can easily exceed 3 seconds.

Packet size is almost irrelevant to the speed of light latency. I've had limited success in using Skype and HNS - but the conversations are not full duplex - Over

I could call our Vonage telephone from Net2Phone on the same computer. Yes, there was a delay. But we could carry on a reasonable conversation, eventhough both telephone systems were on the same computer and Internet Connection.

Why, I do not know.
