PostPosted: Sat Dec 30, 2006 7:41 pm    Post subject: Setting up Vonage Router Behind a Wireless Router Reply with quote Back to top

So I've been trying to read MANY topics in this forum and follow the suggestions to the problems similar to mine, but none of them seem to work .

1. one big issue i am having is after disabling DHCP on Vonage RTP 300 the router locks up and the settings are not saved. It seems to be processing soemthing on the web setup screen but doesnt go anywhere for many minutes.

------------
My current setup which I do not want to change is
(cable modem) ==> (D-Link 614+ Wireless Router) ==> (Vonage/Linksys RTP 300)

Ethernet wire connects D-Link port to Linksys WAN port.
Laptops connect to D-Link via wireless. Have IP address of 192.168.0.xxx
Computers connect to Linksys via ethernet wires. Have IP address of 192.168.15.xxx
------------

2. Heres i my problem:

a. My computers connected to Linksys cannot access Laptops connected to D-Link.
b. My laptops connected to D-Link cannot access network printer on Linksys router.

I understand both routers have DHCP enabled, which is causing problems. But because of #1 i cannot properly disable the dhcp on Linksys. Ami doing something wrong? I will be very thankful if some one can guide me through setting up both routers so that all the computers can access one another.

Thanks in advance.

Your problem #2 is a straightforward problem. But before we get to solving problem #2, I need to ask you why your DI-614+ is in front of your rtp300?

I ask this b/c I have the DI-524 and it doesn't have QoS and so I put it behind my rt31p2. Likewise, I just took a look at your DI-614+ manual and it also says nothing about QoS. Which most likely means that it doesn't have it.

As a result, your network traffic will give not assign any priority to your telephone call versus your computer requests. This could result in poor call quality.

My suggestion is to put your DI-614+ after your rtp300 and disable the DI-614+'s DHCP. Now comes the fix for the computers not seeing each other.

As you mentioned the laptop connected to the DI-614+ has an ip address of 192.168.0.xxx while the computers connected to your rtp300 have 192.168.15.xxx and herein lies the problem. Because your computers are on different subnets, they cannot see each other. if you disable DHCP on the DI-614+ and let the rtp300 give out all the ip addresses, all your computers will be on the 192.168.15.xxx network hence you should be able to have restored shared folders and printer.

If you want to know how to disable the DI-614+ from a wireless router to simply an access point, go to my post here:

hope this helps.

I have my cable modem, then my Motorola Vonage adaptor and then my Linksys wireless router. I find my wireless router losing its internet connection quite often, but I still have phone service.

take a look at my post at the url in my earlier post. it should give you some directions on limiting the router capabilities on your wireless router thus making it less likely to conflict with your Vonage router.
