Post subject: Vonage in Portugal, Proxy server won't register
I've recently purchased a
Vonage
device in the U.S. and have been trying to get it to work here in Lisbon, Portugal. I saw that another user here in Portugal was having a problem as well. I spent a lot of time on the phone with a very kind gentlemen from
Vonage
who was trying to help me get it hooked up.
He helped me for over and hour on the phone and said that everything is working except for the last step, which is the registration with the proxy server. The light on my
Vonage
device blinks green four times in a row. When I pick up the phone, it says that it cannot register with the
Vonage
network. He couldn't figure out what was stopping the last step.
I called my internet provider here in Portugal and they do not block
Vonage
or other
Voip
. I've also done the test call that was mentioned and it worked fine.
Can anyone help?
-Jonathan
Here are the details requested:
Are you getting internet service through your router? Yes
Is the phone light on the VTA coming on? Yes, it blinks green in a series of four blinks.
Do you have dial tone? No, just a message that says the phone cannot connect to the
Vonage
network.
Are you missing incoming calls, outgoing, or both? We don't have any connection at this time.
Is the router set up as a DHCP server? I'm not sure what this means. The router is a D-Link, wireless ADSL router
1. Your location: Lisbon, Portugal
2. Your ISP name and type (cable, DSL, wireless etc):
DSL, through SAPO, Portugal Telecom
3. Upload and download speeds:
256 Kbps Upstream, 4096 Kbps Downstream
4. Modem make and model:
Router/modem: D-Link DSL-G604t
5. Type of
Vonage
adapter used ie RT31P2 or PAP2:
Linksys PAP2 Ver. 2
6. Setup of Network:
Our phone line goes to the wireless router. Then our
Vonage
device is connected to the wireless router
7. Issue you are experiencing ie dropped calls, choppy audio etc:
Cannot get a dial tone on phone and the phone light on the
Vonage
device is not lit.
8. Run this
Voip
Test:
I ran the
Voip
test and the score was pretty good. A 4.0 I think.

This may be the key issue. By default, the PAP2 is set up to get its IP dynamically (automatically). This means that the device it's connected to- the DSL router in your case- needs to provide that service. It does that by acting as a DHCP server. Log on to your router and look through its admin pages. Make sure that it's enabled as a DHCP server.

Steve,
Yes, I checked and it is running as a DHCP server.

Hmmm. What address range is the subnet for your wireless router? For example, my Motorola VT2442 uses 192.168.15.1 through 192.168.15.254 . You can find this in the LAN settings for the router.

Steve,
My router has a valid IP range of 192.168.1.2 - 192.168.1.254.

The reason that I asked was that I had just read a post that says that
Vonage
boxes have problems with any router using the subnet 192.168.2.xxx , the problem being with that last 2. I see it doesn't apply in your case.
As I said, the PAP2 is set up by default to use DHCP. However, it may have been changed somehow. Try using the telephone command interface to check and make sure that it's enabled for DHCP.
