It sounded like a great idea since we have a lot of family and friends in the Binghamton, NY area (area code 607). However, the V-Access number that Vonage has in 607 is located in Ithaca, NY which is a long distance call from Binghamton.

I sent Vonage a note asking if they would add another V-Access number in 607 but they replied that they couldn't.

I agree with the observation - V-Access should undoubtedly help a few people who have callers within a local call from a V-Access number - it's a free alternative to getting an 800 number or a virtual number in that area. If I knew someone close to a V-Access number I'd make sure that they knew about it.

Does anyone know - if someone calls me through V-Access, is it totally free? Or do incoming V-Access calls get charged against my 500 minute allotment (I'm on the $15 plan).

Interesting. Seems like it directly competes with at least two of Vonage's other value-added service offerings.

Note that it can also be used as a free way to call a US 800 number from Europe, even without a Vonage account.

You do realise they have a toll free v-access right?
Just scroll down that list till you see the 800 number.

OK, I am really confused right about now.

So there's an 800 number. Anyone can dial the 800 number, and from there dial any Vonage number?

Why does it make any sense for Vonage to offer this? I'm not complaining, I just can't understand their thinking...

I just tried it (I'm not home right now) and it worked...

Yes, you can dial the v-access 800 number. Then from there call any Vonage user. Thats all theres to it.

Lets say you have someone who does not have Vonage in LA, but you live in New York. He would be charged long distance to call you. With v-access, he can call a local access number in LA, then call you.

This also saves you from having to get virtual numbers everywhere.

This toll free number isn't listed for Canada, I had to try it and see if it works here and it does, now friends and family can call me for free! Thansk for the tip. Vonage isn't available in Newfoundland....yet.
