That's patently false. Even in Vonage's own area, it's not true. Vonage is in Holmdel, NJ, which is in the 732 NPA. The V-Access numbers Vonage lists for the 732 NPA are in the 226 and 292 NXX codes, which are in Keyport and Manasquan, respectively. Keyport's local calling area consists of the Keyport, Atlantic Highlands, Holmdel, Keansburg, Matawan, Middletown, Perth Amboy, and South Amboy exchanges, and nothing else. Manasquan's local calling area consists of Manasquan, Belmar (Monmouth), Point Pleasant, and Spring Lake.

It's worth noting that part of Matawan is in the 848 area code. However, calls are still a local call from the 848-468 exchange to the 732-226 exchange, even though the area codes are different. Middletown has numbers in 732, 848, and 908, all of which are local to 732-226. And a lot (but not all) of Perth Amboy is in 908, but still a local call to 732-226.

However, all of the following exchanges (and towns within them) in the 732 NPA are a toll call from both of the listed 732 V-Access numbers: Asbury Park, Bound Brook, Carteret, Deal, Dunellen, East Millstone, Eatontown, Englishtown, Farmingdale, Franklin Park, Freehold, Jamesburg, Lakehurst, Lakewood, Linden, Long Branch, Metuchen, Monmouth Junction, New Brunswick, Rahway, Red Bank, Seaside Park, South River, Toms River, Woodbridge

Now there may be numbers in other NPAs that are local to some of these towns.

It's pretty complicated, and in New Jersey, you may have to dial 1 even if it's local (because NJ requires 1 before a foreign area code even if local, unlike places with toll alerting) and will not have to dial 1 in some cases where it's toll (because NJ does not have toll alerting). See http://www.nanpa.com/nas/public/npa_query_step1.do?method=displayNpa and enter some of the NJ area codes, such as 732 and 848.

In fact, unlike Canada, most of the major population centers in the U.S. do not have toll alerting.

It depends on your interpretation of what Vonage means by "Call a Local access number." The list of numbers is a list of "access numbers" which Vonage never states are local. It's your responsibility as a consumer before dialling a number to find out whether there will be call charges.

I think MANY will read that page as "no toll charges" if they select a area code and get a number! Very few will distinguish between "toll" and "long distance"

Vonage support is already on record suggesting there are no toll charges as posted in this forum. I sent Vonage Support a question regarding this and am awaiting their reply. Not that I will believe it Wink

Vonage is going to have a mess if they don't state "check with your local telephone company" some other similar clarification.

Vonage won't have a mess. Let the buyer beware.

Free is a relative term.

I've been trying since November to get Vonage to stop claiming that V-forecast is "free". It may be "included free with every calling plan", but it isn't free. It uses up minutes in your plan, which can cost real money if you go over your limit.

Interesting update

When I first became aware of V-Access, (two days ago) US area code 518 had one "local access" number.

As of two minutes before my typing this, US area code has three local access numbers. Strangely, two are in the same exchange.

Perhaps they are realizing one number per US area code is almost useless.

They still have to fix wording BIG TIME. I suspect most readers of the V-access page will see "without paying" and believe it.

That is a large area code, maybe thought that having 3 numbers available might be easier to get connected.

I still think having the 800 V-access number was the best thing they did, taking it away was the worst!

All three 518 V-Access numbers are in the Albany rate center. 518 is pretty big, and lots of places are a toll call to Albany.

"Big" a meaningless term... My brother in 518 has toll charges to call his neighbor across the street! Turns out his street is a county line and although the same copper bundle serves them both, it is a toll call.

Posted mostly for the humor or sadness of how absurd things are.

At least I received an honest answer from 2nd level Vonage support

Dear xxxxxxxx,

Thank you for contacting Customer Care.

We understand from your email that you're inquiring why only one number is provided per area code for using the V-Access feature. Please be advised that we're still working to improve this feature, and right now there's only one number available for a free service.

We hope this assisted you in your inquiry.

Here is the first one:

Thank you for contacting Customer Care.

We understand from your email that you need clarification on not being able to call 1-
800-342-6640.

We would like to inform you that Canadian customers do not have a option for adding
Toll Free number to their account so the number 1-800-342-6640 is not related with
your account.

We also understand that V-Access number for area code 613 is long distance for you. We
are constantly working to expand our areas of coverage, but at this time we do not
have a timeframe when we will be offering it.

If you have any questions now or in the future Vonage Customer Care is eager to assist
you 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Please visit our help center at
http://vonage.ca/help.php?lid=nav_help or send us an email from our Contact Us page
at http://vonage.ca/help_contactUs.php. You can also call us Toll Free at: 1-877-272-
0528.

Sincerely,

Vonage Customer Care

I then wrote back and told them I wanted to know why the toll free number for V-Access was no longer available, and that I don't want a toll free number for my own number.

Dear XXXX,

We understand from your email that you would like to call your phone number
through V-access Toll free number.

We recognize this might be important for some customers and the Technical Team
are looking for a solution to this. We are not in a position to offer a time
line as to when we will be able to offer this service.

If you have any questions now or in the future Vonage Customer Care is eager
to assist you 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Please visit our help center at
http://www.vonage.com/help.php?lid=nav_help or send us an email from our

Oh come on. It was fun while it lasted, but harassing clueless Customer Service robons about it is a waste of your time.

Vonage is bleeding money at an unbelievable rate, and giving every customer the ability to attach another leech by using a free 800 number was obviously a mistake. Publication of the toll free number was certainly never intended, and anyone who wants Vonage to continue to exist as a business and just maybe some day turn a profit should be able to see that.
