It seems a shame Vonage won't clarify what is "local". There is no wording on their page (as I recently read it) confirming what one poster stated. That if they serve the area code, the call is billed as local.

I happen to be in Eastern MA where you can't incur a toll charge with 10 digit dialing, only 11 digit. So you can test a number just fine. But I'm a Vonage customer, I'm interested in folks calling me who have no way of "testing" other than looking at their bill.

I just re-read the Vonage V-Access page, it states

"
1. Dial the Local access number.
2. Dial the Vonage phone number or 800-number.
3. The call is connected without incurring long distance or international
charges.
"

That seems clear, IF there is a local access listed for an area code, it incurs no long distance charge.

Now, is that true???

Seems they should add "toll free for any caller in that area code"

gerryg,

It is a common misconception that area codes have something to do with whether a call is a local or toll call. That is not necessarily the case.

For example, I live in the town of Acton, Massachusetts, in the 978 area. People who have local phone service in Acton may make local calls only to the Acton exchange (including the Towns of Acton and Boxborough), the Maynard exchange (including the Towns of Maynard, part of Acton, and the Town of Stow), the Concord exchange (including the Towns of Concord and Carlisle), the Harvard exchange (the Town of Harvard), the Littleton exchange (the Town of Littleton), and the Westford exchange (the Town of Westford).

All other towns and cities in the 978 area code are a toll call. Vonage lists only one V-Access number in the 978 area code, which is a 978-662 number. These numbers are in Andover, which is about 20 miles away, well outside our local calling area. Calls would be charged by the minute, depending on the plan and the provider.

In fact, anyone in the 978 area who does not have a special toll calling plan would be charged toll charges to call the Vonage 978 V-Access number unless they are calling from a number in the Andover, Lowell, Lawrence, North Reading or Wilmington rate centers.

While there may be some places where an entire area code is a local call, this is usually not the case.

The information about what is a local call is available at http://www.localcallingguide.com/

jcovert,

I was not suggesting area codes have anything to do with tolls.

What does exist are special numbers that are toll free when called from any phone within the same area code. I had one for a long time with a cell phone. Anybody in the same area code as my cell phone (at the time I had it) could call my cell toll free.

Such "toll free from same area code" numbers exist. It is not clear if Vonage is using such but their wording clearly says that calls to the access number you look up (if found) is free of toll charges.

Either they are using such special numbers or they worded their V-Access page incorrectly.

That was a special Massachusetts tariff for cell phones and pagers which was eliminated when it became possible to port cell phone numbers to landline phones. And by the way, it had nothing to do with your area code. Anyone in the entire Eastern Massachusetts LATA (LATA 128) could call your cell phone, regardless of area code, until the special tariff was eliminated.

Vonage's V-Access numbers are standard land line numbers in normal landline rate centers, and the standard toll rates will apply to call them from any rate centers which is not indicated as a local call in the rate plan for the two rate centers involved.

I am 100% certain that callers not in the few towns I mentioned that are local to Andover will incur toll charges to call the Vonage V-Access number for 978, even if within the 978 area. The only exception would be if they have a special calling plan which includes calls outside their normal local calling area.

Again, http://www.localcallingguide.com/ has the information about which NPA-NXX combinations are local to each other.

Here in Canada if the number is long distance and you tried to call it without the 1 prefix, you will get a recording. My area code requires 10 digit dialing, so if I dial a number in this area code and it isn't a local call I will be informed to dial 1 before the number.

If that is true, Vonage's V-Access page is going to lead to VERY upset folks. It gives you an "access number" and clearly states:

"The call is connected without incurring long distance or international
charges"

which is false representation if you are correct.

For this to be useful either Vonage has made provisions or needs to provide access numbers each locality they serve AND change wording on their pages.

Which begins:

"Disclaimer: The information on this site comes from a variety of sources, and is not guaranteed to be 100% complete or correct."

I'm not suggesting they are not correct but also they clearly state thay might not be. There exists a conflict between this and Vonage's representation of the service.

All I know is when I called Vonage about the v-access numbers. They told me if Vonage is in that area then all the numbers for that area code are toll free which means you won't be charged.

I live in 613 area code, we don't have Vonage service here so therefore the v-access number doesn't work as a free call.

You can have people test the numbers by dialing it, the call won't go through if they don't put the 1 in front (for those states that require the 1 prefix)

It depends on your interpretation of what Vonage means by "Call a Local access number." The list of numbers is a list of "access numbers" which Vonage never states are local. It's your responsibility as a consumer before dialling a number to find out whether there will be call charges.

I know I am correct. As an expert on Local and Toll rating, especially within Massachusetts, I stake my professional reputation on the fact that the Vonage Andover number is a toll call from most of the 978 area.

Of course, someone might argue "those are not 'long distance' charges, those are 'regional toll' charges (in the Massachusetts case), but in other cases, since LATA and area code boundaries don't necessarily coincide, there may be cases where a number will even invoke an inter-LATA long distance charge.
