Well well well... look at that!! It is working now indeed, finally!! Is there a Vonage spy eavesdropping on these forums we should be thanking?! Eek

I too have access to a number of POTS lines in Ireland, Italy, UK and Germany... I have tested multiple V-Access numbers in France, Italy and UK using these lines and they are all working like a charm.

I guess it's now time for me to go ahead and disconnect my virtual numbers.... Twisted Evil

Vonage isn't letting anyone use the toll free number anymore. This ****, where my in laws live there is no Vonage service, therefore no local V-access number.

Can't say I'm really surprised. The net effect was to give every Vonage subscriber toll-free inbound access, at least for callers who knew the trick.

Here's a real shocker, tech support didn't have a clue about this toll free number.

I tried to explain to the girl about this toll free number and she tried to tell me there was no such thing. Hello, I have been using it!

I told her their is a v-access number for my area code, but it is long distance for me. I live in a 613 area code, but the local number is for Ottawa, I don't live in Ottawa. There is no local number for my area so I chose a 506 area code since most of my family is there.

I told her I called the toll free number from work and also when I traveled because not every place has a local access number.

She then tried to tell me that maybe I was using another provider! I told her what the message said, you are using a free service provided by Vonage, please enter the Vonage number you are calling, press 1 to complete the call or something like that.

I guess I will call the tier 3 tech support number, maybe they can tell me more.

I am having a problem using the access number for Mexico. 525553515425. This number is based in Mexico City. My father-in-law is in Tlaxcala, Mexico which is about 30 miles north and has been trying the number with and without the country code (52) to no avail.
I can verify that the 800 number no longer works. I have tried it and my father-in-law has as well and there is no response whatsoever.
Any suggestions would be appreciated.

The v-access number you are using is probably long distance where your father lives, what kind of recording are you getting when you call it?

I got an update on the V-Access service.

I was told by customer support that if there is Vonage service provided for the city within the area code then the v-access number is a local call.

Where I live in the 613 area code, Vonage doesn't support the area, but if I lived in one of the other cities that it does cover than the numbers would be a local call. I am still waiting for a friend to call me to confirm it is true what I have been told.

How does one know the single number per area code actually is "local"? Where I am, we have to dial every number with area code, no hint if a call os local or not. Question

Too bad you don't have "toll alerting". Here in Massachusetts, the citizens were active enough when 10-digit dialing came in that they got the DTE to require that NPA-NXX-XXXX would never be a toll call, only 1-NPA-NXX-XXXX would charge anything other than local rates.

That said, you can look up your local calling area at http://www.localcallingguide.com/

I guess all you can do is dial the number without the 1, if it requires the 1 in front the recording will let you know that it is not a local call.

I am not familiar with what Jcovert is talking about "toll alerting"

It depends on what state he lives in. Dialing plans vary widely.

Telco central offices in a state with toll alerting will not place a call to a toll destination without the 1 prefix.

Not every state has toll alerting. For example, in New Jersey, in the 201 area code, both local and toll calls within the 201 area code are dialled with just 201+7D, no 1 required. In Eastern Massachusetts, where toll alerting is mandatory, local calls are placed as NPA-NXX-XXXX whether the call is in your own area code or an adjacent one, and toll calls are placed as 1+NPA-NXX-XXXX regardless of area code. Permissive dialling allows local calls to also be placed with the 1 prefix, but toll alerting requires it for toll calls. In at least one state, New Hampshire, toll alerting is optional. By default, you can call anywhere within the state with just 7D, no 1 required even if toll, but if you order toll alerting, you must dial 1+603+7D for in-state toll calls.

If you don't have toll alerting, then there is no way to know whether a call is local or toll without consulting the tariffs.

You can find out whether 1+ indicates toll for calls placed from within a particular area code at http://www.nanpa.com/nas/public/npa_query_step1.do?method=resetNpaReportModel
