Oops, my bad, I mis-read the number when I dialed it in the dark at 1 AM. Sorry about that. Don't dial "842" instead of "342"-- you'll get a fax machine. Confused

But I stand by my second statement about only having one number per area code. A better thing for them to have done would be to beef up the capacity of the 800 number and just go with that. What's the point of having the individual numbers in each area code if they aren't local to everyone in that code? Maybe some smaller geographic codes are local to all numbers, but most aren't.

And I still can't find the V-Access page on the Vonage site unless I put the term in their search box. Time for a bookmark I guess.

I totally agree with you with regards to the local number access. You may find a number for the area code, but it isn't local for everyone in that area code.

Now to find the access numbers is rather easy, but they don't jump out and bite you.


Go to either vonage.com or vonage.ca depending which country you live in.

Click on features

Click on V-Access and then choose the country, area code and then you find the number or you can book mark it. Myself I wrote down the toll free number.

This is a great feature indeed....if only it worked!!! I have a UK virtual number right now but it is not being used that often. I keep it mostly as a 'convenience' for my friends there, but most of the time I end up being the one placing the call....

But now here's the catch!!! (or rather the problem I am experiencing) I've asked a friend in the UK to call me using a London UK V-Access number. He gets the Vonage prompt, dials my number in Canada, and then... nothing... the line hangs up!! I've had him try other UK V-Access numbers, same result. He tried also V-Access numbers from France, Italy, Spain, etc... same result!!! And get this: if he dials a V-Access number, and then when prompted enters my UK virtual number instead of my Canada number, the call goes through successfully!!

As a last step in my testing/troubleshooting, I've called myself (and so has he) using some USA V-Access numbers. I wanted to be sure it was not my account or Canada phone number that was the problem. But it works like a charm when using a north american V-Access number!!

Now I'm overly confused by this. The Vonage website clearly states that this feature works internationally in all countries where V-Access numbers exist. Could that be false advertising? Or is it simply a glitch in their system?

Obviously, I have contacted Vonage about this but the 2 different CSR's I've spoken to (in India, of course) did not even know what the V-Access feature was and kept thinking I had a voicemail problem (surprise surprise...). So I wrote to Vonage instead, first reply I got was a detailed explanation on how to access my voicemail (again). The 2nd time around, the response I got was basically a cut and paste from their website on how to use V-Access.

Has anyone else tested this and experienced the same problem?

When the call was made from the UK did they put in the long distance code as well as your number ?

When calling to the USA from the UK access numbers, you need 001 before the number. Then it will work. (Just tried it successfully.)

If you tried it using your Vonage line, I agree it works. It will actually prompt you to enter your voicemail password as it recognizes you. But this is not a valid test. If you try calling a UK V-Access number from a UK non-Vonage landline, it fails.

You're right. Sorry. I should have done a better test, especially since I have access to a UK London POTS line via a client PBX. That was stupid of me. Definitely broken. Has anyone managed to convince Vonage Customer Service that there really is a bug here?

However, now (13-JAN-2007 22:49 EST) it is actually working. From a London telephone, I dialled 7101 9500, got the prompt, entered 001-603-xxx-xxxx# and then used "2" to verify that it had the correct number, and then 1, and the call went through, rang my Vonage phone, and everything worked right.
