PostPosted: Fri Dec 29, 2006 11:10 am    Post subject: Dual VT2142 Configuration Problem one working Reply with quote Back to top

Hi all, I would like to thank everyone for the help upfront.
My setup is as follows.

1. Your location: Green Bay, WI
2. Business Class Cable - TimeWarner
3. 1MB Up and 1MB Down
4. Cable Model is a Zytel 900 Series
5. We have two VT2142's
I have the network setup as follows the cable Modem is plugged into a Linksys BEFSR41 Router and both Vt2142's Lan ports are plugged into the router as well as there internet ports, the PC is also plugged into the router all have static IP's and I can browse to the web from the PC. My problem is that I have one VT2142 that is working and the other will not link of the line lights. I almost had it the other night but after sitting on the phone with Vontage support they had me reset the device and now I can't get it back to were I had it Smile. I can't for one figure out what is the best way to setup my environment. I hope this is enough info to get started if not tell me what you need from me and I will get it.

Thanks

Aaron

I assume that you can log onto the admin pages for each VT2142 since you've set static IPs on them. Also, you say that you have the LAN ports and the internet (WAN) ports of both VTs plugged into the router. Was this a typo? Only the internet ports should be plugged into the router.

If you log onto the VT that's working and look at the setup for it, and then do the same for the one that isn't, what differences do you see? When you re-boot everything, is it always the same VT that doesn't work? Have you tried booting with just the one that isn't working, leaving the other off temporarily?

Set one IP for 192.168.15.1 (which will be the default anyway for one)
And set the other to 192.168.16.1 Reboot the network and both should work fine together

First off thanks for the responces from both of you. Steve I had plugged in the Lan ports to the router so that I could browse to the Vontage devices, I only have one nic in the PC so I guess I didn't want to have to switch the ethernet around everytime I needed to do something on the VT's. So I don't need the LAN plugged in or do I need another ethernet card maybe this is were I'm confused. I have compared the two VT's and nothing looks to be different, the only thing that I saw lastnight before techsupport had me wipe the bad one was the the lines status said unprovisioned and I belive it wasn't link (in bottom left its show ip infomation forget what its called). Its the same VT everytime that doesn't work, I have tried to plug in the one that doesn't work and can't seem to get it going. I do have another question on both VT Nat and Firewall are checked on the WAN portion should those be?
Techie74, I don't understand why the two devices have to be on seperate subnets? Should I jut change the IP and leave them plugged in as I have them then?

Thanks again both of ya

one has to have a different ipaddress because both cannot function at the same time., they are conflicting each other. so one has to take another ID.

Set them up like this. From the back of your modem run one ethernet cable to the internet port of your first VT2142. Then from ethernet port 1 of your first VT 2142 run another ethernet cable to the internet port of the second VT 2142. Then of course you will set the IP addresses to the ones i said previously. I am a tech for Vonage and i see this all the time. This configuration usually works well.

Techie74, I think you're overlooking the fact that he's running a primary router and both VT2142s are plugged into it.

Montra, you definitely do not want to plug both the internet and LAN ports of the VTs into the router. Run cables from the router LAN ports to each of the VT internet ports. Leave the LAN ports open except when you want to access the admin pages on one of them. You will have to switch to PC back and forth between the two VT LAN ports to access the admin pages on each. This shouldn't be a big deal, since you seldom want to do that once things are working.

If one is still working with this configuration, plug into the LAN side of the "bad" one and see how it's set up. Since you did a reset on it, it should be looking for a dynamic address. Since you're using static, the main router may not be set up as a DHCP server. Enter a static address for the bad VT, reboot it, and see if that gets you going.

If you want to go the route indicated by Techie74, that's fine too, though I prefer the setup you've been using. If you go the other way, then Techie is correct. You need to set the VTs to have different subnets.

By the way, why do you want to use static addressing? Dynamic is so much simpler for small setups.

Thanks again everyone for your help, I won't be able to try these ideas out until tuesday as we are out of town for the new year. I will hower try them and repost the results.
So Steve I only need a ethernet run to each of the internet ports on the VT's and then they all can stay the same IP? I used static only because I thought something was wrong with the device pulling a IP from the router, so most likely I will just turn on the routers dhcp and let the VT's pull there IP's from there.

Techie74 you said to do the following: From the back of your modem run one ethernet cable to the internet port of your first VT2142. Then from ethernet port 1 of your first VT 2142 run another ethernet cable to the internet port of the second VT 2142 Can I then plug the ethernet port from the PC into the LAN port on the second VT so it can browse the web and then I wouldn't need the router anymore I guess?

Thanks and happy new year

Yes. But I still prefer your original solution, assuming the router is working well.

Steve I have another question on the router, I currently have a external address defined in the router that I got from the cable company do I need this defined or can I simply just put the gateway of the cable modem into the router and then leave the ip to be whatever?
