PostPosted: Thu Dec 28, 2006 10:43 pm    Post subject: Some incoming calls going straight to voicemail Reply with quote Back to top

Hi there. Here's my info:

1. Red Lion, PA
2. Comcast Cable
3. 300 Upload and download 6000 download
4. Modem: Motorola SB 5101 SurfBoard
5. Vonage adapter Linksys wireless-g wrtp54g
6. Network setup: Modem---->Vonage Adapter-->PC
7. Issue: Incoming calls intermittently go directly to my voicemail without ever ringing.

I've searched through these forums and see that others have experienced a similar problem. I've tried everything from disabling my voicemail to call tech support and going through the typical shutting down and rebooting of the router and modem, but the problem continues. I'll call my Vonage number from my cell, the phone might ring, then I'll try again about a minute later and it'll go straight to voicemail.

Has anyone discovered what's behind this problem?

Thanks
Joe

when a call goes directly to VM it means that your Vonage device has lost its connection to the Vonage proxy servers, which means that something must have happened to your internet connection.
and for you to reestablish connection, yes, it is correct, you need to power cycle your devices. unless the higher tech from Vonage rules out a defective device then i think you need to call your ISP regarding this.

To verify that this is what's happening, set up a network unavailable number in your account setup on the Vonage website. Then the call should forward to that number rather than going straight to voicemail.

I just set this up this morning to forward calls to my cell if the network is unavailable. Just to clarify, if the calls get directed to my cell, does that mean then that it's a Vonage service issue and not an ISP issue?

Thanks

No, it would still be an ISP issue in most cases. What we're doing here is verifying Talisman's diagnosis.

OK, today I had a call that went straight to VM without ringing either my Vonage phone or my cell, despite the fact that I have set up my cell as a network unavailable number. What does this mean?

It means something isn't working the way it's supposed to. I hate to say it, but I'm afraid you're going to have to take this back to customer service and see what they can do. Try the 888 250 1799 number and ask for tier 2 support.

I briefly had a similar problem.
My fix was: (could be for a completily different reason though)

1. turn off all simu/forwarding and VM functions in dashboard.(and then log out)
2. power cycle all equipment.
3. set Vonage device on routers DMZ
4. power cycle all equipment. (then recheck if device on DMZ)
5. set in dashboard simu/forwarding and VM functions. (log out)
6.power cycle Vonage device.

hope it works for you if all else fails.
Oh, and if you just got Vonage service give 48 hours for all services/features to function properly.

Here's a question that will show how much I don't know. I want to try your suggestion, Elvis, but don't know exactly how to set my Vonage device on the DMZ. My Vonage adapter is my router (wrtp54g wireless router w/2 phone ports). Does this make a difference?
