I've a question. I just signed up with VZ DSL 1 year contract. My local phone company is not VZ - it is KISS LD. My question is following. I want to drop the phone service, but still keep DSL. I know Verizon offers dry loop dsl in my area. And also I want to transfer my phone# to Vonage. How would I go about doing this - so that it is least painful in terms of interruption of service. I don't mind if I'm out of phone/dsl for 2-3 days. |

get the dry loop dsl first then, and once you've got that setup, you can go about transferring your number without losing/interruption of your phone service. |

talisman - thanks for the reply. One more question: For dry loop service - does the phone service has to be disconnected first? Or can verizon turn on dry loop service, and then I can disconnect phone service anytime I chose. |

actually, you can already transfer your number over to Vonage without losing your dsl service with verizon, they automatically convert your dsl into dry loop. you can call verizon and verify this with them if you like, because my friend talked to an agent from verizon and he assured us that they will not lose their dsl, they only need to power cycle their devices/network. |

did it actually worked for your friend? I spoke with few VZ customer serivce rep, and they're all clueless as when it comes to dry loop, and keep transferring from one guy to next. First they claimed that DSL service will not work without VZ local - i told them that my local phone service is not with VZ, and I do have the DSL working perfectly fine. Then they said that if i switch to Vonage, the dry loop service wont be automatic. So, not sure how reliable the VZ reps are until I actually try to do it. My feeling is, I don't need the phone serive at all - this dry loop is something made up from VZ. Probably, i disconnect my phone service & verizion dsl will still work fine. |

Ask your DSL provider if they offer a DSL with no phone line. This is usually known as a dry loop DSL. |
