yeah, I know... sounds like one of THOSE problem descriptions.
That's all I could get from my dad. Everything was working fine until two days ago, and it stopped working.
laptop --- vt1000 --- dsl modem ---- internet
In the beginning I didn't bother, thought it was a problem w/ the internet. No luck.
Had him connect the laptop to the dsl modem and launch the pppoe client and internet is working fine.
Back to the VT1000, checked that it isn't handling the ip address to the pc. Apparently the DHCP server is dead. Power LED blinks, but I couldn't get a definite answer on "how many times" it does that.
Next step is to set a static IP on the laptop and try to get the config interface for the vt1000 via the web browser using it's 192.168 address.

Now, the questions:
1) anyone had a similar problem? If so, what was the solution?
2) is there a way to bring the VT1000 to factory defaults?

Any help greatly appreciated. Currently there is no way to go onsite to troubleshoot it myself.

1. yes: call Vonage and they'll send you a linksys box
2. yes but look at #1 as the solution

You should look at another post that describes how DHCP stopped working because the Vonage VT1000 is handicapped in that, unlike a PC or a router, it can't provide a fully compatible DHCP header. According to this post,, the VT1000 won't provide a "Client ID field", only the "MAC field" of the BootP header can be used to identify the device and assign an IP. Now if the ISP switched from the MAC field to the Client ID field method of identifying its subscribers, then the VT1000 will stop working, I guess.

I've also had a problem that might be related: Up until ca. two months ago, I had my VT1000 set to obtain it's IP by DHCP, and it worked just fine. However, one day it stopped working, and the only way to coax it back into working order was to use another device with the same (cloned) MAC address (in this case a PC) and have it obtain an IP via DHCP from the ISP. I could then plug this IP as a static IP into the VT1000 and it all worked fine.

Note that this only works for me because my ISP gives me the same IP everytime anyway, so there's no conflict.

Anyway, it **** that the VT1000 isn't as capable at providing a working BootP header to the ISP as any other ethernet hardware, like PCs, routers, network cards, etc. Couldn't Vonage fix that with a firmware upgrade??

Mine stopped working, too. It's "stuck" for lack of a better word on the second set of blinks. I've rebooted, changed the configuration- nothing is working. And it was working fine last week.

What should I do if I can't call? I mean, I don't have a cell phone! I can't call Vonage if my phone's not working.

Help! Confused
