edit: nevermind. i see ScreenPop supports external applications. I can use YACTextSend to send the CID data to computers elsewhere on the network (i.e., computers on a different ethernet segment than the one on which ScreenPop and the Vonage router live)

Just added to VONaLink ScreenPop an example of integrating with YACTextSend.

Over the weekend I added the following features to my personal software:

1. Supports ethernet sniffing of the SIP data, so no analog modem is required. Main reason i did this was so we could have screen pops for call-waiting caller-id. Which is REALLY cool.

2. Implemented a "click-2-call" like interface, you can right click on a number in the history and return the call.

3. Monitor the SIP data for voicemail notifications. Will display a bubble on your task bar when you have new voicemail. The tray icon also changes if you have voicemail, and changes back to normal after you have listened to the messages.

The VM indicator is interesting. Maybe I will add it to VONaLink ScreenPop too.

Through this whole discussion, I only saw one mention of NCID.

I implemented NCID and I must say that I am very impressed with how it works. Its also open source so I can modify as needed.

I setup the NCID server, then I put a copy of ncidsip on my firewall (I run a linux firewall).

I put NCIDpop on all the clients throughout and all is happy. There are ncidpop clients for several OS's.

Some advantages for me:

callerID shows up BEFORE the phone even rings, unlike a modem solution where it doesn't come through until after the first ring

Works for multiple lines.

No hardware needed (I didn't have to hang a modem on each phone line and hook it back to a computer). Strictly a software solution.

CallerID history is visible from the client (ncidpop) even if the client wasn't active (computer off, etc) at the time of the call.

I can create an alias file for better names or numbers that don't have names, if the number/name is in the alias file that name shows instead of what Vonage sends (useful for other Vonage customers and cell phone customers).

When I'm not home I can vpn back to my network and still see callerID history.

NCID can act on incoming calls by launching a script (to send me an email, or any other number of things).

Unfortunate for me, my phones don't support callerID without expensive options. I must run a phone switch and to add callerID to it requires a $100 card (not so bad) but also requires me to upgrade all the phones to $200 display phones (too cost prohibitive).

I run it here in my house (pretty big network), it is flawless. The only thing I have not done is documentation. If anyone wants to try it, I will make the system available on my web page. No charge of course.

I only wrote it for my family, as I couldn't find anything out there that worked this way: client/server. So, I haven't documented it yet...

I'd like to try the client/server software you wrote for caller id. Does it have the ability to run a program when an incoming or outgoing SIP call starts and another program when it ends? Thanks.

Vonage Click2call is very simple to use. All you need to do a HTTP get on a URL. See:

https://secure.click2callu.com/

Vonage does not provide an API for caller ID. We have developed a software product to do this. Drop me a private message if you are interested.
