Vonage is suggesting that I plug the phone adapter into my modem before the router. The cable from the internet slot of the router would be plugged into the ethernet (yellow) slot of the phone adapter. My phone adapter is the Motorola VT2142-VD. Think Is this a good idea?

If you have a good router with QoS capability, then I would say that it's not a good idea. Keep the router first, plug the VT2142 into it as a client, and set QoS to favor the VT.

I have no idea if my Linksys Wireless Router, Model WRT54G has that capability. Could you advise?

Thanks!

Okay, my Router has QoS capabilities. Now, how do I set it up for a Linksys, WRT54G Wireless Router?

Any help, suggestions, or links to detailed instructions would be appreciated.

Thanks so much.

Being that your router has QoS built in to it, it would be a better bet to leave it in front. But, if you don't know how to set it up or just want to make your life easier. Put the VT2142 in front. The VT had QoS built in for the phone and it is already setup for you. It would make your life easier.

Thanks for the response. However, I would like to set it up the way it's supposed to be set up. Currently, the phone adapter is after the router as Vonage suggested. In order, Modem, Modem to phone adapter, ethernet cable from phone adapter to router.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

I work for Vonage as an ATS agent. The manual tells you to put the Vonage behind the router but that does not work. It can case problems with choppy audio and dropped calls. The firewall on the linksys routers in very slow.

We at Vonage recomenc that you place the Vonage device BEFORE your router. If you hve a PAP2 or and VTA, then they go after your router, otherwise, place it before.

Okay, I will explain how it is hooked up since this thoroughly confuses me. Think d'oh!

At the modem, cable comes from the ethernet port of the modem to the internet port of the phone adapter.

At the router, cable comes from the internet port of the router to the ethernet port of the phone adapter.

This is what a Vonage Technical Support Rep. told me how to hook it up. Is this correct?

Modem: Linksys, BEFCMU10
Router: Linksys, WRT54G
Phone Adapter: Motorola VT2142-VD
