I bought the Vonage device and checked for its working in Missouri before trying to set it up in Pune India. When I follow the steps given in the Vonage quick start guide, I get stuck on the step where it asks to power up the Vonage device and wait till the power light stops blinking and becomes solid along with a solid light for the phone 1 line. My power light just does not stop blinking and the phone 1 light does not even light up once.
Can anybody please help me with this problem? Any suggestions Steve?

try to do a powercyle and a reboot, turning off your modem first, then the Vonage device and the computer.. before you power on those devices, wait for around 10-20 minutes..

you can also do a hard reset, try to locate a red dot beside the black/power port.. press it for 10 seconds then release.

by the way sir, who provides for your internet?

1. Your location - Pune India
2. Your ISP name and type - BSNL (ISP Name) & ADSL
3. Upload and download speeds - Connection speed is 256 kbps (not sure what my upload/download speeds are)
4. Modem make and model - Huawei: smartAX MT800
5. Type of Vonage adapter used - Motorola VT2142
6. Setup of Network - Huawei modem---->Vonage Motorola VT2142 adapter---->PC
7. Issue you are experiencing - Power light on Vonage device does not stop blinking and phone1 LED does not light up even once. When i connect my phone on phone1 line i get a msg that this line is not authorised for use, try the other line (I had activated this line in Missouri...it had worked then)...when i connect to phone2 i hear a constant 'phone engage' like tone...i can hear these messages even without connecting to the modem.

OK, basically the Vonage router/adapter isn't connecting with the service. You might want to do a search of the forum, because this issue comes up very frequently with respect to BSNL. Unfortunately, we seldom get feedback telling us of successful solutions.

With most cable services in the US, setup is a snap because everything is set up for dynamic addressing (DHCP). On its WAN (internet) side, the router connects to the modem, getting its address automatically. On its LAN side, the router is set up as a DHCP server. It gives an address the computer, which is set up to get its address automatically. There are no passwords, special protocols, and so forth, and everyone is happy.

With DSL things tend to me more complicated, requiring things like PPPoE and passwords. Your first resource is BSNL. If they're worth a hoot as a provider, they should be willing to help you set up a router, without regard to the fact that it's a Vonage adapter as well. If they won't help, then the best resource that you have is a computer that is already working with the service, because its network setup is exactly the way that you need to set up the WAN side of the Vonage router.

Start by carefully noting the network setup of the computer. Write everything down so that you can get back to where you started if necessary. Then change the computer setup to dynamic addressing (DHCP). This should make it compatible with the default LAN setup of the Vonage router. Now plug it into the LAN side of the router and reboot. You should now be able to log onto the admin page of the router. Check your manual for address and password information.

Next, change the WAN setup of the router to match the network setup that the computer used to have (and no longer has because you changed it). Include passwords, PPPoE protocol, static addressing, or whatever. Then plug the WAN side of the router into the modem. Reboot everything and you should be good to go.

Now, fair warning. Don't forget the part about being able to get back to where you started. Also, since I've never had DSL, I've never had to do this myself, but it should work. Whether it does or not, please give us some feedback.

Hi Steve,

Thank you for your reply. As you suggested, I searched for similar problems that other BSNL users were facing and found out in one of the discussions that this same problem was fixed by doing the following;

"after enabling the DHCP on the DataOne modem now I am able to browse net as well use Vonage modem simultaneously.

The Data one modem can be accessed by typing the ip address on the browser and then you can enable the DHCP on it."

Now my question is (though it may seem silly)....What IP address should I be typing in my IE browsing window? I looked up my ip address by typing ipconfig in the cmd window...there is autoconfiguration IP address under Ethernet adapter local area connection and then there is IP address under PPP adapter BSNL...which one should i type and where should i type that to access my modem...

And Steve I'll surely give you a complete feedback on this once it gets going....

Thank you very much...

you're using vt2142 right? it should be 192.168.15.1 but im not sure if you can access it since you mentioned that you're getting an ip add of 169.xxx.xx.xx (auto-configuration) you might want to check the cables attached to your router - because for one thing, you shouldnt be getting such ip add - its just not valid (if you really are getting it)

also im not exactly sure but i just found out that some BSNL isp use static ip - if you have successfully logged in to the von router and its still not working, try using these static information and input into the router.

STATIC – 192.168.1.46,
SUBNET – 255.255.255.0,
D/GATEWAY = 192.168.1.1
DNS – 61.1.96.96, / 61.1.96.71.

I'm afraid I don't know.

Keep in mind that enabling DHCP on the modem wasn't the route I had in mind- though it's certainly one way to go if you can do it. Don't forget about being able to get back to where you started! Also, be sure to note your computer network setup before you start with anything. It's still your best source of information about what is working now.
