I am attempting to hard wire the Vonage adapter to work through the jacks in my house. I have disconnected everything at the outside telco box and there is no dial tone or any sound when a phone is connected to an inside jack. However, when I hook up the Vonage adapter to an inside jack, nothing happens. I don't get a dial tone on any other jack/phone. I've rebooted the adapter and tried again. Any suggestions?

First, are you sure that the jack you're using was working with the other jacks with the old land line? If not, try another jack. Also check your cords.

Assuming that's not it, first make sure that your Vonage unit is working by plugging a phone directly into the Vonage jack. If it is, unplug the phone and run a cable from the Vonage jack to the wall jack. (I'm assuming, of course, that you're absolutely sure that you have the old land line disconnected. Also, do not use the second phone port on the Vonage box. That's for a second line.) What happens when you plug that cord in? If the phone light on the Vonage unit starts flashing, then you have a phone off the hook somewhere or a short in the wiring. Troubleshoot that by unplugging every phone in the house first. If the light keeps flashing, you'll have to find that short somehow. If it stops flashing, you should be good to go. Start plugging phones in and see if they work.

If the light did not flash when you plugged the box into the wall, see if the system is working now. If not, you should go out and get a simple Y-adapter that splits a phone jack into two jacks (not the L1/L2 type- those are different). Plug the splitter into the Vonage box and plug a phone into one of the splitter ports. The phone should work. Now run a cord from the second port to the wall jack. The phone should still work and the rest of the phones in the house should as well. If they don't, and they probably won't if you've come this far, then you have an open in the wiring between your "Vonage" wall jack and the rest of the jacks.

Thanks for the information. Interesting that you note the blinking lights. I have had an orange blinking light on th Phone 1 line since I got Vonage. Phone 2 is solid green. But the phone line is plugged into the phone 1 jack. Perhaps this is the source of the problem. Do you know how to fix that? Thanks.

Interesting. Which adapter do you have? If you plug a phone directly into phone jack 1, what happens with the light when the phone is on hook, what happens to the light when the phone is off hook, and what do you hear on the phone? Same questions if you plug into phone jack 2.

On the 2142's the blinking light means there is a voicemail, atleast thats what a Vonage tech told me....

That's one of the meanings. The other is that the phone is off-hook. I believe the blink rate is different for the two, but I don't know which is which.

Does anyone have any advice on how to determine for sure and then fix shorts in house wiring? My Vonage worked for the first few days through my home wiring (after going through the disconnect process into the house). But it then stopped and I can't get it back. I've tried multiple re-boots, resets and switching among lines throughout the house.

I also have the blinking light when the adapter is connected through the house.

Could an adapter that I use for my Dish receiver which runs the phone line through the electric line be incompatible/problematic with my Vonage? It worked fine before Vonage.

First thing I would do is try plugging a phone directly into the Vonage device and check for dial tone. If you don't get a dial tone there then you have isolated the problem to the Vonage device. Depending on what you have, it could possibly be the box. I have had to replace the Mot 2142 before. I would say chances are that the problem is with your Vonage device, it would be wierd for everything to stop working, wiring usually doesnt just short out like that.

Thats the first thing I would check. Let us know what you find out.

I agree. As far as determining if there are shorts in the house wiring, first get your adapter working with it unplugged from the house wiring. Then plug it into the house wiring. If the phone light starts blinking, unplug the adapter. Then go around and unplug everything else that's plugged into the house wiring. Plug the adapter back in. If the phone light starts blinking again, then you have a problem.
