PostPosted: Mon Dec 18, 2006 5:24 pm    Post subject: Caller ID incoming and outgoing with VT2142 Reply with quote Back to top

I'm not getting caller ID names on some of my incoming calls. And some of my outgoing calls do not display my name at the receiver's end.

I say "some of my calls" because some incoming calls do have the caller name, but others do not. I can't spot any pattern that distinguishes which type of calls have the name and which ones do not.

I have not done a thorough check on outgoing calls. But at least one recipient -- who assures me they do have caller ID enabled at their end -- does not see my name on their display.

I did several searches in this forum and found thousands of hits related to caller ID. I didn't find any that actually show a definitive resolution, but I don't know how to refine the search to narrow the search to ones that actually match my environment.

I'm using the Motorola VT2142 provided by Vonage. The internet connection is through an RCA DCM425 cable modem, with a LINKSYS WRT54G between the cable modem and the VT2142.

TIA for any info.

Phil

I also have the Motorola VT2142, and from not only personal experience, but also numerous explanations on this forum I am sorry to say that Vonage as of yet does NOT provide outgoing Caller ID WITH NAME. It'll only show your number to the people you're calling.

As for INCOMING Caller ID, I'm not sure how that works from POTS (Plain Old Telephone Service) to Voip, however I believe the Caller ID is parsed from the telco of the originating caller, and whatever they have their Caller ID set as is what you'll get. Most of the time the name of the person (or company) calling you should be provided along with their telephone number, however sometimes it is not. But that doesn't have anything to do with Vonage as far as I am aware.

I'm sorry I am unable to provide you with more assistance in this matter. Perhaps someone else can give a more detailed technical description.

As far as your name showing up on others' caller ID: On my cordless phone, if the caller ID number exactly matches a phone number stored in the phone's Phonebook, the phone will display the Phonebook entry name instead of the caller ID name. So when I call home from work it says "Pete Work", when I call home from my cell phone the caller ID shows "Pete Cell", etc.

So even though Vonage still doesn't do outbound caller ID names, others might see your name if your name and number is in their phone's drectory.

Just to add, it's not an issue with the VT2142. The same will happen with any Vonage box.

Out of curiosity, what cordless phone brand and model do you use? My Panasonic 5.8GHz cordless phone system doesn't parse it's phone book entries to the caller ID. Thanks!

It's a vtech 2.4 GHZ. Added bonus: on the original packaging it was advertised as "WiFi friendly."
