I hang out at Manic Geeks, Linksysinfo, and HyperWRT's web site.

Good luck with your issue. About the only answer I can offer is throttling any applications that are gobbling up bandwidth, giving a Linksys WRT54GL with Tomato a try (or you can save a few bucks by going with a Buffalo router) - it has inbound throttling which MAY work for you, or it may not...

Thanks, Ill put that In my bookmarks.

As for throttling applications, I have nothing that really eats up my bandwith. Sometimes internet surfing causes problems, and sometimes no one is on a computer but I still get problems. (while typing this I wonder why i thought QOS would help ....) Hopefulyl calling my cable company will get somewhere.

to make absolutely sure you don't have some bandwidth-gobbling malware or something, try unplugging your computer and using *just* the Vonage line, with nothing else at all on your Internet connection. If you still have the problem, then it's your connection. If not, make sure your antivirus is up to date, run a spyware scanner, etc...

Alright, I have another question. I just ran some speed test with and without using my Vonage line. W/o i got 900kbs down. While using Vonage i got 200 kbps. Now, i have my phone quality set at 30KBs. 30*8 is 240. So, I should only be using about 240kbs of bandwith for Vonage, NOT the 700kbs like Im actually using. Why is Vonage taking up so much space?

I guess ill call Vonage now...

EDIT:

I just looked on my Vonage dash board. According to them the bandwith saver is measured in Kbps. So, i should only be using 30kbps, which is no where close to the 700 i am losing.

Hmm, the Vonage device should be taking up almost nothing in terms of bandwidth when the line is not in use. My WRTP54G sends one single packet about every 30 seconds or so to keep the NAT connection alive, and occasionally an extra packet to check for updated firmware, etc.

So, either the Vonage device is messing up your connection somehow, or it is consuming massive amounts of bandwidth that it should not be.

Time for a call to Vonage. Good luck.

Vonage doesnt use anything when not in use, but uses way more than 30kbps when it is in use (to make my post clear- all the numbers are confusing I know Eek )

Anyway, calling Inda got no where. They ran one test and got a 220 ms response time and blamed my ISP... Thats nice thanks for listening to my problem. Good greif, I wish the techs had a damn clue instead of reading off a damn computer screen!!! Evil or Very Mad

Oh, and another thing. The incompetent CSR had me type in Ipconfig to find my IP to put in the DMZ on my router. He claimed this would open up all the ports to my Vonage adapter. Uh, NO!!! You just opened up all the ports to my computer... The IP for the Vonage box wont be found on my computer.... Lol
Id explain it to you, but I cant understnad you! **starts to cry at this moment**

Anyway, I called again I got a hold of a better CSR. He said something about my Vonage box connecting to an old server, so he updated me to a new one... not sure what that means but I hope it fixed it.

Aah, Vonage tech support. The people who made me the networking semi-expert I am today.. Smile

It's simple. If I ever called Vonage (which was infrequent), I had to learn so much about networking to undo the damage they had done, I eventually learned how to do it properly. Twisted Evil
