PostPosted: Sat Dec 16, 2006 4:23 pm    Post subject: Forwarding international origin calls to my mobile Reply with quote Back to top

Hello,

Let me start by saying I'm a Vonage newbie, since October, but so far I'm very pleased and impressed by it.

Alright I'll cut to the chase, my situation and my ultimate question.

The situation.

I have the Unlimited Vonage Residential Plan ($24.99 a month).

My significant other lives in the United Kingdom and I live in the United States.

I have two numbers connected to my account. My US number, and then I have a virtual number based in the UK near her. She calls the UK number whenever she needs to get a hold of me since it's a local call for her.

In event I'm not here. I'd like it to be forwarded to my Mobile phone. However, I do know it's expensive to call a mobile in another country because you are using the mobile network.

If I were to set it up so that any calls I could not answer here from her were forwarded to my Mobile phone, would she get charged for that? Or would it still be like her calling a local number?

I understand it would drain my minutes on my Mobile, but I'm not concerned about that, I'm just wondering if there's any additional charges if a call were to be forwarded to a mobile number.

Thank you all very much! I look forward to reading your answers.

She would not be charged. You bear the charges of any forwarding you do, and in this case it would be from a US number (your Vonage number) to your mobile.

Thank you Steve48! But if it's my US number calling my Mobile then why does her number show up (not my US number) on my Mobile's caller ID?

That's interesting. I didn't know that that would happen. I guess the forwarding process is forwarding that information as well as just handling the call so that the caller ID comes up right.

I've noticed lately that when people call me long distance from their home phones using a calling card, their home number rather than the number of the card agency comes up on the caller ID. It seems that CID is getting better.

Of course if you're concerned you can stop forwarding the calls for awhile and check her bill at the end of the month. But you can see that phone companies could never get by with charging the caller for forwarding a call. If they did, a caller could call a number local to him without realizing that the owner of that number had forwarded it to outer Mongolia and end up with a huge bill. It would be chaos.

I have experienced the same thing when I forwarded calls. The original call's caller ID is passed on so that I cannot even tell that it's from my home phone.

This is another great Vonage feature.

If someone calls your Vonage number and is forwarded to another number, your Vonage phone passes the number of the person being forwarded to the receiving phone, not the intermediary number.

Example:
- My cousin calls my home Vonage number
- I have the home Vonage account forwarded to my cell phone
- I see my cousin's phone number on my cell, not my home Vonage #

No additional chage to my cousin....

Also works with network availability # forwarding.

Not unusual. When I first started with Vonage I forwarded all of my Verizon landline calls to my Vonage number. I the original caller's caller ID info got forwarded to Vonage with the phone call.

Absolutely. What a great feature! I am very impressed by it. Sure beats her paying 50 p (about 1 dollar) a minute to call my mobile phone.

Thanks everyone for your inputs, you all have been so helpful.

There might be a better solution for you and your GF that a UK virtual number (that you have to pay extra for).

Look into V-access:

http://216.115.22.200/features.php?feature=v_access

On the right hand side of the screen, you’ll see drop down menus for access numbers, first by country (including the UK), then by number.

There are currently 37 access numbers around the UK.

If one of them is a local (or not too expensive) call for your GF, she can call that number and then call your Vonage number without the need for you to have the virtual number.

Please give it a try and post how it works for you.
