Hi I just sent a Vonage modem ( motorola VT2142) to my GF in delhi.
She is using the unlimited Sify internet, ( sify comes without a modem) but she did manage to hook it up with the given wires etc to her laptop, and even gets a dialtone on the phone, but unable to access internet or make calls..although she hears a voice loop on the phone, which is garbled up.

What is the proper procedure, step by step if someone can take a few mins to explain and what can be done. Should she call Vonage and try to troubleshoot? She can not get a Airtel connection.

I am spending a ton on calling cards excluding the money spent on skype..please advise.
before i sent her the Vonage device, i tried it here in US and it was working fine

You might want to do a search on the forum. There has been a lot of threads on making things work in India.

Basically, the VT2142 is set up by default to work using dynamic addressing (DHCP) on both the WAN and LAN sides, and that's great for most cable connections in the US. I suspect that for you it was just plug and play here in the US. When connections require special setups, it gets more complicated, and that seems to be the way it often is in India (I assume we're talking Delhi, India, not Delhi, NY!).

Your friend's first step should be to make contact with the ISP and see if they will help. I wouldn't emphasize the Vonage part with them; just ask for help setting up a router- or even a computer for that matter.

If that doesn't work, then the trick is to make the WAN side of the VT compatible with the service and the network setup of the computer compatible with the LAN side of the VT. Start by looking at the network settings on a computer that's working OK with the service, because that's how the WAN side of the router needs to be set up. Write everything down and don't change anything until you're comfortable that you'll be able to get back to where you started if necessary. Then change the computer to get its address dynamically (using DHCP). Plug the computer into the LAN port on the VT2142. Re-boot everything, open a browser, and go to http://192.168.15.1 . The admin page for the VT should come up. Log in using router for both the user and password. You should now be able to set the WAN side of the VT2142 to match the settings that are currently being used by your computer to access the service. Reboot everything, and you should be good to go. When booting up, remember, modem first, wait, then VT2142, wait, then computer.

I belive the internet speed might be slow which inturn causes the audio to be garbled. Best thing to do is to run a speed test given in Vonage website. Make sure that the ubload speed is above 90kbps.
