I have installed the v-phone on a pc in europe (while traveling).
The voice is choppy. When I insert the v-phone in the usb port there a message 'Fail to run autorun device' but then goes on to run the application and it gets 'Ready to call'. Everything seems to work but the sound is choppy and cant understand a thing.
How can I fix that? The adsl is 4.8 mbps.
Thanks in advance. |

Well, the "fail to run" is somewhat concerning but I don't really have a good answer for that.
The first thing I would do is reduce the bandwidth saver to 30Kbps (G.729) and see if it sounds better. If you have any firewalls on your computer I would also make sure the V-Phone is allowed and possibly disable it.
If your router has an SPI firewall I would consider disabling it temporarily to see if it makes a difference and possibly trying a DMZ. (Yes this is bad security so you don't want to leave it).
It seems like your bandwidth or throughput is low despite your 4.8 Mbps connection. See if you can find the source of the slow down and maybe test your internet connection to make sure your are getting what you think.
If everything comes back good, there may be a problem with your device.

Thanks Kukk,
The window xp firewall in not activated.
This is the info from the test of speed
Download speed: 727560 bps
Upload speed: 272392 bps
Quality of service: 75 %
Download test type: socket
Upload test type: socket
Maximum download pause: 121 ms
Average download pause: 38 ms
Minimum round trip time to server: 168 ms
Average round trip time to server: 264 ms
In the summary it says that the bandwidth is enough for voip. |

Your round trip latency to the server seems to be very high. Maybe the server you tested your connection on was not the closest. Also the fact that you are in Europe is likely causing very high latency.
Nevertheless I would still try the easiest solutions first. If you have not already, change the bandwidth saver in your web account to 30 kbps. The next most likely culprit is your router, make sure it is passing data through without inspecting the packets (DMZ). If possible, try another or connect your computer direct to the modem.
You can't do this yourself but you may want to contact Vonage tech support to increase the sample rate on your audio. This will allow out of order packets to reorganize themselves more easily, which you will probably experience a lot on such a high latency connection.
Ask to reduce the ptime on your line (to 20 or 10ms), it may be too high for a European connection.
