Post subject: VT1005 - Can't obtain IP address
Hello,
I just purchased a VT1005 and followed the instructions. However, after powering up the unit, I only get 2 blinks (aquiring network address) and can't access the Internet unless I disconnect the cables and go straight from my computer to my RoadRunner RCA cable modem.
I know it must be something simple but to be honest, I am lost. Have read many posts before hand but nothing has worked. Something told me this was going to be a unpleasurable experience.
If anyone could help a
Vonage
Adaptor for Dummies fellow in simple, step by step terms, it would be greatly appreciated.

The first step is to post the technical details listed in the sticky message at the top of the forum.
Are you using static or dynamic addressing on your computer?

Thanks for the reply Steve.

When you say dynamic, would that be the same as DHCP? If so, from what I can tell, that is a go. I see something that says Assigned by DHCP when check "local connection."
On back of Moto, both greens solid. WAN yellow blinks. PC yellow solid.
Again, I'm knew to this game. So please bear with me.

Yes, dynamic and DHCP mean the same. The VT1005 is set up for dynamic by default, so it should be working with your computer's setup- but obviously isn't. Make sure your cabling is correct- modem to WAN port on the VT, VT LAN port to computer. Power everything down, wait 2 minutes, power up the modem, wait 2 minutes, power up the VT1005 and then your computer.
Can you access the internet now? Does the phone work?
Assuming no to both of those things, connect the computer directly to the modem and run the forum
Voip
speed test. Report the results here and we'll go on from there.

Steve,
Still a duck out of water. Cannot access the Internet when wired as instructed. Thus, no phone. (Looks like $100 down the tubes.) Have powered down and recycled a thousand times. Still does not obtain IP address.
Again, I'm not all that familiar with IPs and as mentioned, on back of Moto, both greens solid. WAN yellow blinks. PC yellow solid. Does that Indicate anything?
Here is also a snapshot (my I.P. blurred) of my Network Connections. Am I looking in the right place?

Are you using any special firewall service or any at all including windows. Also your RCA cable modem may have a login service for administrative purposes. Check the settings in that as well.Is your modem DOCSYS 2.0? Also check for any MAC filtering

NoRide, the details section of your computer network setup indicates that your computer gets its IP by DHCP. Since your computer works with your modem, it also means that your service is assigning IPs automatically via DHCP. Both of those things are good, since the VT1005 is supposed to work that way by default. The bad news, of course, is that it isn't.
We have two possibilities that I see. First, the VT1005 could be defective. Second, it may have come to you with non-default settings. Unfortunately, the VT1005 doesn't have a reset button, or we'd push it and get past the second possibility. But let's trek on. Plug your computer into the PC (LAN) port on the VT. Power everything down.
Now power up the modem, wait 2 minutes, then power first the VT1005, then the computer. Can you get to the internet now? Probably not, or you wouldn't be here. Open your browser and type in the internet address
http://192.168.102.1
. Does the VT1005 admin page open up? If so, check the WAN side configuration of the VT and make sure that it's set to get its IP dynamically (using DHCP). If it's already that way but you still can't get to the internet, then power everything down before you go to bed. Try it again in the morning. (No, I'm not nuts (much), but some modems "remember" the device that they're used to working with- your computer in this case. They refuse to work with another device until they've been turned of for awhile. I've never heard of a modem used with Roadrunner that has this "feature", but it doesn't hurt to try.)
By the way, don't forget to check the things that Techie74 mentioned.

Thanks for the help guys. Nothing seems works. Not worth the aggravation.
Will be returning box to retail store and will attempt to cancel
Vonage
account. We'll see "If for any reason you wish to cancel service within 30 days of activation,
we'll refund your money with no questions asked
" is true. If not, charge back time.
Thanks again.

One last followup as I don't want to leave a negative feeling...
Contacted
Vonage
support last evening after dinner. Suprisingly, call went right thru. Support was friendly and efficient. Account was canceled. Verified by email. Credit card should be credited.
FYI, now looking at
Voiceral.com
as it is a company that is ran in my home state (did not know this until the other day). A friend at work uses them and is happy. Support is handled in house which is always nice.
Thanks again for your efforts guys. Happy Holidays!

Post subject: IP address problem
I'm having exactly the same problem with the same modem, although I'm using a DLink VTA-VD phone adapter. Service provider is also RoadRunner.
If I cycle in this order:
1) Modem
2) Phone adapter
3) Computer
The phone works fine but my internet connection fails, reporting an IP address conflict with another system on the network. If I cycle in this order:
1) Modem
2) Computer
3) Phone adapter
The internet connection works, but the phone is blinking twice trying to find an IP address. The address on the PC is being assigned by DHCP. I can't log into the configuration programs on either the adapter or the modem (even if the is one for the modem - the manual doesn't mentioned anything).
My set up is:
Location: New York
Service provider: Broadband cable from RoadRunner / Time Warner
Modem: RCA-DCM425
Network: Modem with an ethernet connection to the phone adapter, and a USB connection to the PC (the modem is supposed to be able to route two connections to two different machines)
Performance:
Download 4,837,224 bps
Upload 369,008 bps
QOS 95%
RTT 21 ms
MaxPause 55 ms
Any help would be much appreciated...
