Can anyone recommend a free service which will let me send and receive faxes but will not result in getting unwanted calls to my number afterwards?
I really only want to send and receive one test fax (preferably 5 pages) just to verify that it's working, but don't want to end up with telemarketing calls as a result of a once ever test.
The sent fax I would need to get routed to an e-mail address (so I can verify it got through and can see if it looks normal).
I did find faxZERO (which will let me receive a test fax to my fax machine) and eFax Free (which will let me send a test fax from my machine to my e-mail address), but I've never used either before and don't know how safe it would be to give them my number. Has anyone used these services before?
Thanks. |

I've used eFax free for many years. I get an occasional spam email (maybe one a month?) and consider that a reasonable price for their service -- I don't use it often but when I do it's most convenient.
For sending, I use www.fax1.com. I put $10 on the account a couple years ago (you get charged by the page sent) and still haven't gone through it yet. the interface is a bit clunky, but very usable and very reasonable given my light fax-sending demands. |

I can deal with spam to my e-mail since I just use a free Hotmail account as a spam trapper. I was more worried about getting unwanted calls from the service owners or whoever they might give my number to. If that's not a risk, I'll be giving them a try. Thanks! |

I've been using eFax for many years for receiving. Never got any non efax faxes, which means they never gave the number out.
They do send about 1 email a month promoting other services...
Once I did used it a bit too much and went over their 'quota'. At that point, the only option became to cancel or upgrade to paid service.
Note that you do need their 'reader' program to read the faxes. The reader does try to contact home to get some banner adds... But most FW will block it...
