PostPosted: Mon Dec 11, 2006 1:54 pm    Post subject: Best VTA upgrade from a VT1005 + Netgear WGR614V4 setup Reply with quote Back to top

I presently have a Vonage with Optimum on line, present connection order is:

cable modem -> VT1005 -> Netgear WGR614

I have also had the router befort the VT1005 as well.... Regardless, 've had nothing but headaches with this VTA and router combo and can't seem to find a configuration that provides consistent service. My ISP is optimum on line and I consistently have a great connection with no packet loss (according to DSLreports tests).

I have not all that happy with the WGR614. It's a pretty crummy wireless router with no QOS features so I've been thinking about getting a new router or a VTA/Router combo.

What isthe most reliable/dependable Vonage VTA? How are the Linksys models with built in wireless? Thanks for any help!!!

If you still need wireless, then I would go with the Linksys WRT54GL, because that's what the networking guys in here seem to like, particularly with 3rd party firmware. The only wireless box that Vonage is offering at the moment is the D-link VWR, and we've been hearing bad things about its firmware. Follow the router with a D-link VTA.

If you no longer need wireless, and your internet usage is light, consider just going with the Motorola VT2142 or 2442.

Is the WRT54GP2 (which has the VTA built in) the same as this (can use 3rd party firmware like Thibor)? That would be a bonus to get it allin one box.

If you're not in a situation where you have to make a change now, you may want to wait. Vonage is beta testing a new Motorola Wireless router/VTA. I've had it for 2 weeks now and am very happy with the performance. It gives me a better wireless signal than I've ever received from my Linksys WRTP54G, and so far the voice performance has been better than both the WRT54G and RT31P2. (Yes, I use both on my 3 regular Vonage lines.)

It's still just a B/G, but in the other end of my condo where my WRTP54G was giving me a low signal or dropping the signal all together, I now get an excellent connection. I even took my laptop upstairs to a neighbor's just to test and the signal rating came back "good".

I wish I didn't have to return it at the end of the beta test. Would rather keep it and send back the WRTP54G.

I Used to have the WRTPG all in one Vonage router. I decided i wanted to seperate the router and Voip adapter to improve performance. I picked up a DLINK DGL-4300 and a DLINK Voip Adapter. The router is a gaming router, and it has more ram then most routers on the market, so my network stays up when i using bit torrent. Its QOS is very effiicient. The DLINK VTA is nice it is currently supported by dlink so there will be updates to its firmware, unlike any of the Linksys products.

Eelhc- No the WRTP54G is not the same as the WRT54GL.

ShelChgo- Who makes the new box? Model number?

VT2542 is coming soon to Vonage, the D-Link VWR is ok router but it need a firmware update to correct some issue with not saving setting in the router. WRTP54G is also good wireless router. it doesn't have WPA-AES as option in wireless security. Smile
