My sister subscribed to Vonage and I'm helping her set up her equipment. She has a DLink DI-624 wifi router, and today she received the Motorola VT2442 adaptor that Vonage sent her.
She lives in an area where there tends to be a lot of wifi traffic, because of this her DI-624 reboots often to find a less noisy channel to use for wifi. I'm guessing that when the DI-624 reboots it reboots the whole router, not just the wifi part; so everything connected to the DI-624 loses its connection during the reboot regardless if it is connected through an ethernet cable or through wifi.
If that is the case then it's probably not a good idea to connect the VT2442 to one of the router's LAN ports, as the connection will frequently be lost. So am I better off connecting the VT2442 directly to the cable modem (outside the firewall/router), and then connect the DI-624's WAN port to the VT2442? By putting the VT2442 outside the firewall/router am I making it a target for '1337 H4X0rZ? Or does the VT2442 have its own built in firewall? |

The VT2442 almost certainly has as good of a firewall as your D-Link router.
While I am not certain if either contains an SPI firewall, both are inherently secure due to the fact that they are NAT (Network Address Translation) routers (PAT to be specific). All incoming traffic on both routers is discarded unless it was first requested by a device behind the router. It is not so much a firewall as it is a limitation or perhaps a benefit of the technology.
The order of the routers would not matter.

As a side note it is generally better to have the Vonage router connected directly to the modem. This will allow the QoS (Voice prioritization in this case) to work at an optimal level and will rule out other devices as the source of an issue,
I would strongly recommend whenever possible to connect the Vonage router directly to the modem so it is not NAT'ed.
