PostPosted: Wed Dec 06, 2006 10:11 pm    Post subject: Alternate to Dry Loop?? Have verizon... Reply with quote Back to top

HellO!

I am hoping someone can help me! I wasnt told that I would need a dry loop when switching to Vonage from verizon. I have verizon dsl.

So now.. my transfer has been fully approved which means no verizon... which in turn means.. no DSL because I have no dial tone from verizon.

So.. Im kind of annoyed and I have contacted verizon and Vonage quite a few times.. out of all these times only *1* person knew what the heck a dry loop was. Everyone else kept telling me.. you need broadband to have Vonage (well duh Smile )

So I was hoping someone had a similar problem with a solution?? Thank goodness for free wifi hotspots!! Very Happy

thanks!

Try asking them if they offer "naked DSL," which is another term i've heard used for dry-loop DSL. As well as "dedicated loop DSL."

I don't think that Verizon is a provider that Plays Nice in this way (as opposed to Qwest, which does).

You may also want to try:

1) Speakeasy DSL, if available in your area.
2) Cable modem, if available in your area.
3) ClearWire WiMax (www.clearwire.com) -- this one's pretty new. It's wireless on 2.5 (not 2.4) GHz, and is basically WAN wireless. They're available in the Seattle area, and the pricing is pretty good -- $30 I believe for 1.5 down/256K up. That upload speed is what gets me. I do it in a heartbeat if they could offer symmetric 1.5/1.5.

Good luck!

- Mike.

I have had a similar dilema. I really didn't want SBC, but I had to maintain a land line with my DSL. What I finally did was just order a very basic, plain jane phone line service. My line is costing me $10.00 per month but I'm still saving money. My prior cable modem service was unreliable for what I was paying for it which is why I made the switch.

However, it turns out that getting the land line was a good idea. We had to call 911 one day. My son ( 1 year old ) pulled a heavy mirror down on his head hard enough to for the hard-wood frame to cause a major welt and cut. The cut bled through a large towel. When we tried calling 911 using the Vonage line the operator was taking too long to find our local fire department's transfer number. So my wife jumped onto our fax machine, which is hooked up to the land line. dialed 911 and was instantly connected. Since then I've been advising anyone with Voip and kids to maintain at least a minimal land line.

There is also something called lifeline that a buddy of mine told me about which is supposed to be a new SBC product for people with Voip. The cost is only supposed to be $5.00 per month to make free, unlimited 911 or other governement service calls, but it charges you $0.25 per call and $0.05 per minute for all other calls. Basically, it's a payphone line.

help! i would LOVE to KILL VERIZON

they told me if i terminated my phone that the fee would go up by 5 bucks instead it went up to 41 from 20 ****? dry loop 3m something... FORTY ONE BUCKS the reason i switched to Vonage was that verizon was charging me 55 on a 40 plan due to some magic... so i stood to save 20 bucks if Vonage costed me 25+10 in tax which they told me tax will be like 5 but i dont believe them...

so i would have saved 20 bucks but now my dsl went up 20 SO JOY to the world. i might have to disconnect Vonage in my first month and go back to verizon if the total cost still isnt less

I'm in a similar situation. We just signed up for Vonage Canada, took better part of an hour on the phone answering questions. We filled out the number transfer authorization, received a confirmation the the number was scheduled to be transferred, and then........two days later.....received an email informing us we would need to ensure our DSL provider could provide us with a dry loop.

We're with a smaller ISP and turns out they charge $25.00/month for a dry loop.....goodbye Vonage savings!

I'm so angry with Vonage right now.....they could have told us prior to sign up that we had better check with our ISP about the dry loop thing but it was practically the last things they told us......after the transfer request had been submitted to our phone provider!

Now I have to jump through hoops with our phone provider to cancel the transfer and try to avoid losing our number and our phone for a few days!!!

Very, very poor experience with these guys!

You should have known that DSL goes through your phone line, hence you need something to get your DSL.

Did you tell Vonage that you have DSL or did you just say you had hi-speed internet?

Who is the phone company that you are with? I am sure they have DSL service and shouldn't charge you $25 a month for just the dry service. How much are you paying for your service?

I knew I needed a DSL connection and I told them I was using DSL and told them my provider......I'd rather not switch ISP's therefore I'm cancelling my Vonage service.

Just thought it was poor service not to mention to us that we should check to ensure we could get a dry loop before signing us up. Lord knows they had me on the phone long enough!
