My sister has a cable modem, Motorola voice terminal (from vonage), switch, WAP, and other things. I am trying to clean this mess up. Can someone recommend a cable modem that has Voip support integrated in to it? A couple of years ago I saw a cable modem that had Voip support integrated into it, but now I can't find it.

Thanks,
Jack

Cleaning up the mess is one thing, but integrated devices is another. I would recommend steering clear of integrated devices in that, if that modem dies, say only the Voip portion, it COULD affect the entire connection. What I would reccomend is getting a good wireless router that does QOS, and hooking the Vonage box behind it. Add a WAP if extended range is needed. For the modem, just go with a Motorola Surfboard that is DOCSIS 2.0 certified. With that setup, it's clean, and easy to troubleshoot.

Me too, plus, while there may be Voip integrated modems, I don't think there are any that are Vonage compatible.

Thank you all for the advice. Why should I put the voice terminal behind the router? right now the setup is:
cable modem
voice terminal
WAP - laptop
switch
PCs and print server

My plan is:
cable modem
voice terminal
router (8 port ethernet and WAP)
laptop, PCs and print server

Your suggestion:
cable modem
router (8 port ethernet and WAP)
voice terminal, PCs and print server

I didn't think the voice terminal would work behind a router.

Thanks,

What voice terminal do you have? A Motorola VT2442 Phone Adapter?

Because the Vonage adapter/routers are not very robust routers. If you have some heavy internet activity, then they may have problems, and that affects everything. A good, robust router with solid QoS capability, on the other hand, should be able to handle heavy activity. Setting its QoS to favor Vonage assures good phone service as well.

If your internet usage is always light, then it probably doesn't matter either way.

Note that even if you had an integrated Voip/cable modem, it would not be an integrated Vonage Voip/cable modem. The Vonage Voip is a closed system -- you have to use one of their boxes. As others have recommended, really the best solution is to get the simplest Vonage box possible, so if it dies, the rest of your system doesn't die. I recommend the D-Link VTA that Vonage sells, as it is tiny -- maybe 4 1/2 - 5 inches square, by one inch high. Stacks nicely with the D-Link DI-102 box that prioritizes Vonage traffic, too.

I have a cable modem, then my Motorola VT2442 and then my router. I had my Vonage adaptor at the end, but I find I get better results this way.

I do find no matter what the set up is, if I am downloading from bittorrent sites my phone connection is the pits, lots of dropped calls on the other end.
