The telephone conversation breaking up and sometimes dropping during high internet usage (downloading a iso of fedora linux for example) is the reason I am trying to clean this mess up. The QoS is already setup to give voice the highest priority but try to download a large file and make a call and you get problems.
Thanks to everyone for their ideas. |

Two potential solutions:
1) Get another router, and connect like this: cable modem->vonage box->new router. The cable modem's integrated router would not be used other to provide a WAN port for your new router.
2) Get another router, and a box like D-Link DI-102 or the equivalent Hawking box, and connect like this: cable modem->DI-102->new router->vonage box. The D-Link DI-102 senses voice traffic and gives it priority over other traffic.
I have the second setup, and have absolutely no problems with making/receiving calls, or call quality, even when I'm downloading large files or uploading large files. We've testing this by running speed tests, by downloading large files, and by uploading large files, all while on the phone, and there is no decrease in quality. The DI-102 box is something like $50 I believe on newegg. I *think* that the Hawking equivalent is HBB1, but I do not know for sure. |

Cool. Thanks for the model numbers. It looks like I have a lot of reading to do tonight. I am definitely getting another router. I was thinking of a DI-808HV. I have one and it works great. To bad I can't find a router with a 8 port switch and wireless in 1 unit.
The DI-808HV does have QoS built-in, but Voip is not listed. I can add applications based on IP address, protocol, and port numbers. I am not sure how to add Voip. Does it use fixed port numbers? I am 99% sure Voip uses UDP.
Thanks, |

I will say that the D-Link DIR-635 does have everything in one box, besides VoiP/Vonage. It replicates the DI-102 functionality, and also does "standard" QoS, so you can provide (manually) priority for Vonage's box. And it has wireless, draft-N. I have two of these units, but one is just serving as an AP. The other is at our vacation home, which I'll be testing in a few weeks once we get down there. I'm going to configure it completely as a router, and not just as an AP.
For our main home, I'm using a D-Link DI-LB604 router (which provides load-balancing functionality I don't need), and a DI-102 box.
On the DIR-635, I substituted the antennas it came with with 9-db varieties -- over 15 inches long! I think I can get coverage down the street if I wanted to.
(Not a D-Link employee, just have been satisfied with their products). |
