Recently a friend from Canada offered to ship me a Vonage phone adapter. I'm trying to find out what I end up paying with this service. If I live in Qatar and use the 19.99 Vonage package of 500 minutes a month, am I being charged long distance rates of .32 cents a minute from Qatar to Canada on top of the monthly fee. My friend lives in Ottawa which is where my adapter is being sent. |

if you're calling to a Vonage line, wherever in the world that person is, thats free.(feature:in-network calls). |

A colleague of mine uses Vonage in Doha, Qatar and is very satisfied with it. I know at times Qatar blocks skype but I'm not sure how wide spread Vonage is used in Qatar. |

yeah there's been lots of talk in the main forum about off and on problems in Qatar..
To answer your original question, since your Vonage acct is based in Ottawa Ontario, you will have an ottawa number, and you will be able to dial any US/Canadian number free of charge, also anyone that dials you will be dialing to Ottawa Ontario Canada, so it'll either be local, long distance or international, depending on where they are dialing FROM..
as far as Vonage billing is concerned you are in Ottawa, not in Qatar.. |

For billing pusposes your account and phone line is in Ottawa regardless of where the adapter is connected.
If Qatar is blocking Skype I would highly suspect that other Voip services such as Vonage are also blocked. The protocols are nearly identical and may not even differ in port numbers. You can certainly try it since they offer a 30 day money back guarantee but you may need to configure a VPN to an outside liberal country to make it work.
