Post subject: Phone Line Blinking after connecting to home wiring
What I thought was going to be a 30 minute install turned out to be 3 1/2 hours but could have been longer. But thanks to the forum it wasn't.
I disconnected my BellSouth service at the demarc with no trouble. But when I plugged my D-Link VTA into the home wiring the phones were dead. The line 1 light was flashing on the VTA which indicates that there is a phone off hook. After reading many topics on the forum it seemed that my problem could be a short somewhere. I checked the demarc as someone suggested. I checked the box where all my cables come together (and are connected with wire nuts by the way) and they did not seem to have anything wrong. The jack that I am using to plug the VTA into had some work done by me on it a few years ago but it looked Ok, a little crowded, but Ok. I went upstairs where I had BST install a second line and it also looked Ok but a bit crowded as well.
So needless to say again, Thanks to the forum for leading me in the right direction !
So for the heck of it I went to a jack that had always worked with BST service but had never been pulled off the wall to see what a "clean" install looked like. Sure enough, one of the wires had been accidentally run under one of the other screws and when it was tightened down it had cut through the insulation and was causing a short.
If I had not found this I would have had to one by one disconnect the wires from each other until the problem went away. None of them are marked as to which room they go to so it could have been a time consuming nightmare.
