Vonage does not record phone calls!!!!!!!!!!! Think how ridiculous that sounds. The only ones that are recored are the ones that come in through the calls center for customer care and training purposes

It sounds like the customer service calls are recorded. My company records all customer service calls on a several terabyte server. That seems to be what they were talking about.... They don't record your telephone calls.... Only the FBI and CIA do that.

They will be having the start time and end time recorded so that they can charge you. Other than that they cannot have all the phone calls recorded

To get technical- Vonage COULD (if they really wanted to) record a phone call. Vonage adapters use SIP, and SIP uses RTP for media transport (sending voice audio).

When you place a call over SIP, the two SIP endpoints (devices) generally invite each other via a Proxy (that's vonage). One endpoint would be your ATA, the other one would be either Vonage's CLEC or another Vonage server.
Once the SIP call is established, the Proxy will generally re-invite the two sides directly to each other, so the RTP stream (actual voice data) is sent straight from your ATA to the other end, IE the CLEC. This means it DOESN'T go through the proxy, and the proxy can save money because less bandwidth and server capacity are required.
However this does not have to happen. Having Proxy control, Vonage could (if they really wanted to) keep both sides invited to the proxy, which means that the call data would go through Vonage's server and they could then record it.

They don't however, for a few reasons.
1. All the RTP media data would have to pass through their server. That means a LOT more bandwidth and a LOT more server capacity. It costs them quite a bit less not to.
2. Even if they did passthru all the RTP media, to store all of it would be quite expensive. Vonage processes millions of minutes of calling every day, for Vonage to randomly record everybody's calls would cost a fortune in terms of storage space.
3. Even if they did, what would it get them? Why bother? Surely not to resolve a few customer service issues... It would cost orders of magnitude less to simply refund everybody that complained.
4. If they did record every call like that, they would probably be sued, and they would lose. Recording people's phone calls is generally illegal. Spying on your subscribers is not a good business strategy.

Currently Vonage has 2 million customers. We can't record any of your phone calls, and if we could we do not have the space to store them all. The tech could see that there was audio in the international call because our phone system works through proxies in a Protocol call SIP (session initiation protocol). When every you do any thing on your phone... your phone adapter sends a message to our proxies. Basically telling us what to do. As far as the audio, we can read the messages to the proxy saying you are engaged in a call but we can not hear the actual audio.

Well yeah, just think. The compression rates are awesome. PLUS it is recorded. You speak, it is compressed and played to a POTS system at the other end. Even if it is streaming, it is still cpatured to the hard drive. Think of it liek a TiVo, but voice only. There is always the recording buffer waiting for you to get a call, or make one, if not, you woould hear a long delay when picking up the phone to make or recieve a call.

Our system is Voip it does not use POTS(which is PSTN). The only way we can communicate with PSTN companys are through proxy gateways. There is no compression of the audio... only conversion from digital to analog. There can be no recording because we use RTP. The is real time streaming. All we can do is read the SIP messages.

My guess is that they looked at your call log. If they see your calls lasts more than 2 minutes, I would assume the tech agent made the conclusion that your call connected.

I've been told I've been put on "monitoring" status when I called into tech support but I'm pretty sure this is some kind of diagnostic log rather than an actual recording. If it isn't, I've got nothing to hide.
