Hey guys whats up ive noticed something.. that i accently dialed.. a local number in the country that iam in.. and the phone rang like 2 times... and thank god that Vonage did not charge me.. because i hear they charge you when u dial international numbers that are not inclueded in the plan...
well usually to dial to the country iam in.. from usa.. you just have to dial.. 1-809-847-XXXX .. what i dont understand.. is that i dialed.. from my Vonage line.. 809-847XXXX and the phone started to ring.
now my quesiton is since iam over seas.. isnt the vonage.. dialing code for international numbers.... 011-1809-847-XXXX...
this is getting me confused.. you think if i dial it.. 800-847-XXXX... i will still get billed for an international call...??
i would like some advice..on this.. |

if you want to make international call simply dial 011 + country code + area code + phone number.
but if not 1 + area code + phone number. |

Though with Vonage (and probably every other Voip service) you don't need the leading '1'. |

You don't need to dial a "1" when calling from a cell phone either. So what's the big deal.
011 + country code + area code + phone number IS ONLY FOR CALLING FROM THE. U.S. to other countries. If calling to the U.S. from other countries, you must dial their international code BEFORE the country code (1 for US) |

Also, note that it doesn't matter where your Vonage adapter is as to what's local and what's long distance. Rather, what matters is the phone number assigned to the Vonage number.
Here's an example. Say your Vonage number is 425-555-5555, which is a Seattle-area number. You can be at home in Seattle and call 425-444-4444 by simply dialing 444-4444. You can dial a friend in New York by dialing 1-212-333-3333 or 212-333-3333, as noted above.
Now, if you are traveling and take your Vonage adapter with you, to, say, New York, none of the above changes. You can still dial 425-444-4444 by simply dialing 444-4444. And you have to dial your friend in New York by dialing 1-212-333-3333 or 212-333-3333 -- and not by simply dialing 333-3333. Vonage doesn't care where the adapter is, it only cares about the phone number that has been assigned to the adapter.
This is actually why Vonage works so nicely when you are traveling. Even if you're in Asia, Europe, etc., you can dial people in the States as if you were in the States, if your Vonage number is a US phone number. |

I should also add that if you take your US Vonage adapter (with a US phone number) to a foreign country, say Poland, it's not a good solution to use the Vonage box to dial local numbers in Poland, since you have to dial them as if you were still in the US -- and you get billed for them as if you were still in the US. The Vonage adapter in these situations is best used for calling people back in the States, since you dial them (and get billed for them) as if you were in the States.
The easiest way to remember all of this and not get confused is to simply remember that you making outgoing calls using your Vonage adapter as if you were in the geographical location associated with the phone number of the Vonage adapater. Your actual geographical location is irrelevant. |

With reference to miked2's example, I would not recommend using seven-digit dialing with Vonage. Because no leading '1' is needed for long-distance numbers it is hard for the adapter to detect whether the seven digits you have dialed are all of a local number or the first 7/10s of a full number. At best there will be a delay in connecting. |
