PostPosted: Mon Dec 04, 2006 7:04 pm    Post subject: Inbound calls work, unable to dial out. Reply with quote Back to top

So I've managed to get half of my Vonage service to work.. though for whatever reason it seems that the wrong half of the service is working.. in theory i should be able to make outbound calls, and not receive them with my current setup.. when in fact.. I can only receive them but am unable to dial out.

Here's a brief recap of the info from my previous thread here http://www.vonage-forum.com/ftopic17570.html

I'm using an IP8100 ATA, and have it connected via the LAN port to my Layer2 switch. No port forwarding is configured. Incoming calls work flawlessly, however when I attempt to dial out I get the 'The Vonage device has no network connectivity' error.

I can ping WAN addresses from the IP8100's web interface, and I have attempted to set up port forwarding from the ATA to the gateway device (ETH1) as well as from my computer to the IP of the ATA. So I'm quite mystified as to why the ATA can ping and connect to the WAN (obviously) and receive calls, but not place them.

Edit:

Since I never posted this info to begin with.. here it is just for the sake of saying I did it.

Location: Jacksonville, FL
Service: Comcast 9000/768kbit/sec
Modem: Motorola SB5120
ATA: vTech IP8100
Network Setup: Modem -> ETH0 -> Switch -> LAN/IP8100
Issue: Able to receive calls, unable to dial out

Test Results:

Speed test statistics

Packet loss: server --> you: 0.1 %

Packets out of order: 0.0 %

Note these results are slightly skewed as I was using my phone at the time of test.

Hmm.. I've still been unable to figure out why it is that calls can only come in, and not go out.

IN theory if i can receive calls, i should definately be able to make them.. but for whatever reason it's just not happening.

All I have to go on is a not-entirely accurate 'The Vonage device has no network connectivity' error.

Also took a look at the startup spam the ATA logs.. seems it's running IPTables.. and as i never learned too much about iptables.. wondering if maybe the problem here is that the ATA is misconfiguring its nat settings? Here's the log:

192.168.1.4 is the IP Address i've assigned the ATA in it's ISP settings so that I could manually assign the gateway and DNS servers ..

The address for the web-config is 192.168.1.5, also manually assigned.

It would seem that the ATA is NATing the stuff improperly for outbound.. but like I said.. my iptables knowledge is rusty at best as i never dove too deep into the scripting.
