Ok.. after having tolerated using the Vonage box as a router for the last week and consistently getting the routing table full causing the modem to drop connections every 10-15minutes.. I'm back to my original quandry of how to get my network set up to work with the Vonage box, without it serving as a router..

Here's a quick rundown of the setup I use...

I normally run everything through a NAT Gateway using ICS, presently it has 3 NIC's.. ETH0, ETH1, and ETH2.

The cablemodem connects to ETH0, ETH1 runs out to my switch which networks the rest of the house, and ETH2 is hooked up to the Vonage box. Everything with the exception of ETH0 is assigned a static IP.

As it stands, everything except the Vonage router is working properly. The Vonage router is just not detecting any WAN connectivity and giving the solid red ready light.

What i'm having trouble doing is getting the Vonage box to communicate through ETH2. I've tried setting ETH2 to DHCP, as well as hooking it up to the LAN port on the Vonage router. Hooking it to the LAN port allows access to the web interface of the router.. but calls and such are made through the WAN port and there's nothing of any use on the LAN port when the Vonage router isn't being used as a router.

Before I begin pulling my hair out, again.. anybody know if this setup will work? I really dislike routers and their inherent limitations so would prefer to not have to go out and buy a "decent' router. And if this setup will not work, is there perhaps another one that might without involving a router?

Just a few quick questions, although it kind of looks like you're having a layer 1 problem.

- Is there a switch off of ETH2, or are you connecting the ATA directly to ETH2?

- Why do you want the ATA connected to ETH2 instead of ETH1? Security?

- What is your subnet layout on ICS?

The ATA is connected directly to ETH2.. and if by connecting the ATA to ETH1 .. are you suggesting connecting the ATA to the switch?

As for subnetting.. I'm only using the standard class C address scheme with 255.255.255.0 subnet.

I was just wondering why you don't connect it to the switch that's off ETH1. Did you try a crossover ethernet cable to connect the ATA's WAN port to ETH2?

Yea.. I have a x-over cable goin from WAN port to ETH2.. and I've also tried connecting the ATA to the switch with no success either via the LAN port using straight through cable.

Edit:

I think the biggest problem here is I'm using an IP8100 and i've yet to find where in the interface for it i can manually assign the gateway.. so far only can assign it an IP.

Doh disregard that last edit.. made some progres... turned out i overlooked some settings in it and found one that let me manually set all the info.. so now I'm at least getting the green ready light.. but still no dial tone from the ATA.. gettin the Vonage device unable to connect to network error.
