Calling US 800 numbers from Canada

I am interested in getting a personal 800 number so my daughter can call me from Canada.

I read the info on 800 numbers on the Vonage site and it seemed slightly ambiguous on this subject. In one spot it says callers from the US can call you. Later it says callers in the NANP* can call you. In spite of the asterisk, it does not define what NANP is, but those of us who have worked phones know it means North American Numbering Plan and that Canada is in the NANP.

The last item on the website says, “Non-US callers can call Vonage Toll-Free numbers from Domestic US, Canada, Puerto Rico, Guam, and US Virgin Islands.”

To me, this would indicate that callers from Canada CAN call US based Vonage numbers, but since this is my primary reason for being interested in a Vonage 800 number, I emailed Vonage Customer Service with that specific question. The first response was a copy of what was on the website. I emailed back that I wanted specific confirmation that a caller from Canada can call a US based 800 number and got a reply that "only callers from US can call you free if you purchase a US based Toll Free number. The callers from Canada cannot call your Toll Free number."

Well, that should answer the question, but I am left with a nagging suspicion that the service rep did not know what he/she was talking about.

So... I leave it to you, the experts... particularly any of you who may HAVE a Vonage supplied 800 number. Can people in Canada call your 800 number?

Try another Email to Vonage, but this time use the forum contact page- menu, top left, Vonage Information/Contact Support. We're told this gets special attention.
