Hi, I'm new to the forum so this has probably been asked but here goes. I've been with Vonage for a couple of years and have the Linksys RT31P2 router that Vonage supplied. I just got a laptop and want to know the best way to have wireless. Which routers will support wireless internet and Vonage? Use a wireless router through the Linksys? Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks. |

There are 2 ways to go about it. A wireless router will also have a few wired ports.
1. Connect wireless router to broadband. Connect Vonage device to LAN port of wireless router.
2. Connect Vonage router to broadband. Connect wireless router to LAN port of Vonage router.
Both will work. |

The Linksys/Vonage router, WRTP54G (works great for me) supports both wireless internet and Vonage...its basically the wireless version of your Linksys/Vonage RT31P2. If you're satisfied with the RT31P2, purchase any quality Linksys, Netgear or Belkin router and connect accordingly to obtain the wireless access for your laptop. |

Thanks for the advice/ideas. I'm not the most savvy when it comes to this so I really appreciate it. |

The Linksys/Vonage router WRTP54G is the wireless version of the Linksys/Vonage RTP300, NOT the RT31P2. |

The WRTP54G router seems to drop computer internet access when the phone port disconnects. Probably some hacked QOS code in the firmware. But because of this it seems like the best setup option would be getting an off the shelf non-vonage wireless router from your local electronics store like Best Buy and just getting one of the wired basic phone adapters seperate. From other forum posts you would be best off sticking to a DLINK or Linksys 802.11G router and not one of the new standards yet. Then if the phone port dies for some reason, you can still surf the web in the meantime... |

I added a wireless laptop to my configuration this past July. I did the same as you and asked for advice on this forum. 'Arcking' suggested the WRT54GL router (linux-based router). He suggested this router because you can run 3rd party software and it's a more powerful router. If you search the forum for my postings you can find the one that covered this. Follow his instructions.
I did purchase the WRT54GL (Tiger Direct for $59 after $10 rebate) and am running 'thibor 15c code'. I ended up getting forum help from http://www.techguy.org/ site for setting up printer sharing, etc and http://www.linksysinfo.org/forums/forumdisplay.php?f=135 for additional router configurations.
I could not have accomplished setting things up on my own but with the forums help it was a great experience. I could not be happier with my current configuration :
CABLE MODEM>WRT54GL>RT31P2
Both my desktop and wireless laptop run off the WRT54GL and I use the RT31P2 for Vonage only.
Good luck if you decide to go that route. |
