I recently subscribed to Vonage and I am trying to configure my own RT31P2-NA, which I previously purchased when I was using a different provider.

Since this devide is unlocked (it is not a "vonage" device), it needs a few more parameters for configuring it properly, such as login, pwd, server, etc.

I tried to call Vonage, but the customer representative guy I talked to didn't even a clue that you could buy devices that are unlocked.

Any help/advice anybody?

You cannot use an unlocked device as the primary line with Vonage.

well you cannot use that because it is pre configured tot your old provider,
best advice is buy a new device which is vonage-ready

I do already have the VTA-VD, which I am currently using. It just seems silly to have a router with two phone ports to plug in another device with two more phone ports!

Just for sake of clarity:

this is not entirely correct since I can configure my device for any provider. I did personally typed all of the settings for my previous provider. I would just need the new settings from Vonage to configure it again.

Vonage identifies the device by its MAC address. It does not use SIP parameters, so there is nothing to type in.

well Vonage doenst give out settings for the device for it to be configured for the service,
only the device which is from Vonage is the only device you can use for the service

If you get a second line for soft phone, then you are given SIP info.
