1. Louisville, KY
2. Insight Broadband (Cable)
3. 9772 kbps up/926 kbps dn (tested @ speakeasy.net)
4. Modem: RCA DCM425
5. Vonage adapter: PAP2 v2
6. Modem--->Linksys WRT54GS router (QoS enabled with Vonage adapter set to "Highest")--->Vonage Adapter & wired/wireless network
7. Calls are choppy and occasionally dropped. Sometimes audio is bad inbound, however, most often, bad outbound. Obviously, my QoS % is low and jitter is high. Is there anything else I can do about that? p.s.-why are DL speed results so much lower from Voip speed test than speakeasy.net? Thanks in advance for any help!!

Frankly, these Voip test results look pretty good, and don't point to a problem, but I am concerned about the difference in test speeds. Also, I think there's a typo or something in your report of the speakeasy test. Surely you don't mean 9772 kbps up (?).

Please re-run both tests. Then remove the WRT54GS and re-run the Voip test.

Is there a cordless phone in this mix? 2.4 GHz cordless phones sometimes cause issues with wireless routers.

Thanks for the help Steve.

I was wondering if the speakeasy.net speed results would turn some heads. My ISP (Insight Broadband) recently upgraded my neighborhood from 3mbps service to 10mbps. I couldn't believe it either. I have a friend crosstown who gets the same results. Stil, I'll re-run the tests when I get a chance (currently I've "hit the maximum permitted traces" for the Voip test).

You were correct about the 2.4Ghz phones. We learned about that interference about 2 minutes after we got it all hooked up. However, that interference is different from the problems we're having with one-way audio, dropped calls, and "artifacts" in the audio through Voip.

Thanks again.

OK, Here's the new speed test results both with and without the Linksys WRT54GS router installed. As you can see, it's a pretty interesting story. Are the numbers usually this drastically different with/without a router, or do I just need to get a new router? Thanks again for the help!

No, the speeds aren't usually that difference. In this case, I suspect you're running into a speed limitation in the WRT itself, but it's interesting to note that Speakeasy doesn't seem to see a significant difference with and without the router.

In any case, I don't see anything in the test to suggest a problem with phone quality. How is the phone quality if you plug the PAP2 directly into the modem? And how is it if you disable wireless on the WRT?

You might also want to run a comparison test at www.testyourvoip.com (test call to Boston).
