got this from a thread last week:
To Keep things simple for the none technical savvy, simply installing an ATA hooked up to your LAN bypasses OPENVPN (witopia) and so internet traffic of your Voip does not go thru the VPN tunnel.

In able for your traffic to go thru the tunnel u must allow all traffic to go thru the PC where you installed your witopia.. All traffic that goes thru your NIC from your PC are encrypted this way. THUS softphone based configuration will WORK with Skype and the likes of Vonage.

A way to be able to use ur ATA is to install TWO Network card on your PC. USE one NIC to connect to your broadband THEN enable INTERNET SHARING on that interface and plug in your ATA via a crossover cable to the other NIC.

For Laptop based configuration, Buy a wireless router. HOOK UP ur ATA to the LAN PORT of your Laptop. Enable Internet Sharing on the WIFI connection.

Hope that helps those having probs configuring Voip in uae.

Regards,
pinoyians.

This appears to be from the long-running Dubai thread. Frankly, I don't understand it and my answer would have been that you're out of luck if your ISP blocks the service. More detail on why this works, if it does, would be appreciated.

Actually all 1st generation Voip services are subject to being blocked. I have used OrbitalCom and have tested in four countries that I cannot use any Voip - Cable and Wireless in the Caribbean is a really bad ISP that has a monopoly and does what it pleases - seriously - OrbitalCom works great - when I contacted them to see why, they are a 3rd generation Voip Service and use VPP and SSL VPN to slip secretly below any ISP - never have I been blocked and all I have is a simple cheap, well not so cheap 128 k connection despite numerous attempts and articles about Voip being blocked...

Good Luck

If your ISP Provider is blocking the ports for the Device, You have some options.

You can use a tunnel proxy such as the TOR ONION, It enables a encrypted link to another node to allow you to carry your traffic. It's free, but the setbacks are that it's a proxy, and that can slow stuff down. Also can you trust the open end of the proxy??

The second option depends on your network configuration. Each device behind your high speed device (Cable modem / DSL Modem) has to have an IP.. If your ISP is restricting your Modem to only provide one IP Address, then you will have to purchase a router to support the mutiple IP's .

Your Provider could also be restricting your service to only one MAC address. Again the router is the best solution and you would have to "Clone" your mac address from the registered device to the router.. (Most are able to support this feature)

As another person suggested, try to find a service that provides support over stateless SSL connections. Newer Voip devices employ this, depending on the provider.

Finally, you could in a last ditch effort, call the ISP, and employ some social engineering to have them open the ports.

I agree if you are not filling your pipe full of bandwidth, making calls 24/7 then there is no reason to ban Voip on a network. They just want the money..
