I am getting a lot of static lately (the last few weeks) on both ends of the call. The static is sometimes bearable, sometimes not. Sometimes a whistling sound increasing in tone accompanies it.

Here's my setup
San Francisco, Comcast
RCA Thompson DCM 245 modem
Linksys RTP300 Vonage box.
Modem - RTP300 - Airport express

QoS 38%
max D/l pause 285ms
avg d/l pause 10ms
min r/t time 22 ms
avg r/t time 150ms
jitter you-server 4.5 ms
jitter server-you 2.7 ms
packet loss all 0's
supported lines 6
mos 4.0

I called Vonage last week, they switched lines, had me move my devices apart, and buy a new phone. I just got the new phone, same problem.

Any Ideas?

The Airport Express is a wireless router, isn't it? Are you also using a 2.4 GHz cordless phone?

Then that shouldn't be the problem. Your test results have a high max pause but look pretty decent overall.

I was about to suggest a few things when I re-read your first message and see you've done them (re-boot, switch ports, try a different phone). If you're using house wiring, disconnect from it and plug your phone directly into the Vonage box. If the problem persists, disconnect the Airport (temporarily) and see what that does. Also, try running a comparison Voip test at www.testyourvoip.com (test call to Boston).

Although this is highly unlikely, I noticed that you are using a RCA DCM 245 modem and according to the Vonage website, it is considered a docsis 1.0, 1.1 compatible modem and Vonage says it's best to have a 1.1, 2.0 compatible modem.

I wasn't able to get onto the suggested test, but I re-ran the first test, at a time when the static was worse, and got different results:

avg d/l pause 131ms
min r/t time 105 ms
avg r/t time 142ms
jitter you-server 9.5 ms
jitter server-you 8.7 ms
packet loss server>you 0.6
all other packet loss 0

mos 3.7

Interesting my d/l speed is 1/10 what it was yesterday, and my pause times are up. Would this cause static? I would think this would just cause delay.

Motorola SB5120 Cable Modem is DOCSIS 1.1 / 2.0 Compatible. This should work well with Voip, although if I were you I'd contact Comcast to see if they can give you a new modem such as the Motorola SB5120 Cable Modem.

MM, at a time when you're having static, disconnect the Airport and re-run the test. Then disconnect the RTP300, plug directly into the modem, and re-run the test. It's sounding more like an ISP issue (including your modem in that category), but we need to nail it down.

Having static issues also. in Maryland with comcast, and RTP300, netgear wireless router. any advice or help is appreciated
