PostPosted: Wed Nov 29, 2006 9:12 am    Post subject: opening UDP ports on Linksys router for Vonage Reply with quote Back to top

I just setup Vonage on Monday. I have a Linksys PAP2 v2 and Linksys WRT54G router I am using. I read via a google search that I need to have UDP ports 5060 to 5061, 123, 69, 53 and 10,000 through 20,000 open.

I looked on my router settings and I DIDN'T have those other ports open yet. Actually, I only had 5060 to 5061 open. However, I have been up and running fine and working since Monday.

Can someone explain to me what's necessary to have open in order to work/be fully optimal with Vonage?

Thanks,

Derek

5060/1 is for sip
69 is for tftp, they must send firmware updates through this
10-20k is for the actual voice i guess, thats a pretty big range

there's a website off good that lets you know all the ports and what they do

if you're worried about a security risk keep in mind that your router assigns private ip addresses out to any device connected to it, so you are still protected a bit

Just a hint of advice...If it ain't broke don't try to fix it. The only ports that you need opened for optimal Vonage usage are the ones that are currently opened. The only ports that I opened on my Vonage router (WRTP54G) are for applications that require the port to be open for the application to work.

You don't have to open any ports.

Thanks everyone for your suggestions.

I did call Vonage support and got different responses as well.

For the time being, I have no ports open not even 5060 to 5061. I relooked at my router and it was open for another IP address (old PAP2 device I returned) so the PAP2 v2 device I have right now doesn't have 5060 ~5061 open on my router.

I won't change anything..

actually you dont have to open any ports
you will just open the ports if you will do portforwarding...
anyway, just install the Vonage device first and let us see what will happen

I have a D-Link gaming router feeding a Vonage Linksys RT31P2 and with nothing on the Dlink forwarded, everything seems to work except that I can't clear the "message waiting" indicator on my telephone base.
After forwarding 5060-5061, this issue is gone.
The Dlink also has some built-in features that automatically handle common services such as SIP so it's possible that it's forwarding some stuff automatically that I don't know about.

Just a little clarification in terms here... It is very common for the terms "open" and "forwarded" to get confused.

By default, on a consumer router, all ports are open. You do not need to take any action to open a port. Vonage uses outbound communication to establish a connection, and all data from Vonage is sent as a response to that connection.

Some (thankfully few) routers have NAT routing issues that may force you to FORWARD a port. This is sometimes called "opening" a port because it opens the port for unsolicited internet packets arriving on that port. Don't confuse forwarding with having an open port, which simply means one that is not specifically blocked, and can therefore be added to the NAT table.

For the vast majority of people, simply leaving the router alone and allowing the Vonage device to communicate normally works great. The Vonage device sends a packet outbound, which adds an entry to the NAT table, which opens the port for inbound communications in the form of the reply from Vonage.
