hello people,

I am facing some difficulties in installing Vonage if anyone of you could please help me

I have the linksys PAP2 Vonage device and I have a 1 Ethernet port DSL device, when I connect the Vonage the Internet light on the Vonage device blinks randomly but the power light keeps blinking, I spent a lot of time with customer service, she told me that the device is registering but they need IP address of 192.168.15.1 (or something like this) on PPPOA and my DSL provider charges money to give a static IP address, I dont mind paying the money but then again there is no guarantee that I would get the IP address I want,

Is there a way around the problem,

Thank you

Vj

1. id suggest t0 re-install it
DSL MOdem-> router-> Linksys PAP2 (port 1)-> PC or
-> PC
2. unplug everything PC, DSL Modem, Linksys PAP2 (router? do you have one?)
3. connect all cables to proper ports
4. first, plug the modem and wait for it to synchronize. (if theres a light indicator: should be solid)
5. power on existing router, allow to sync
6. check if you have access to internet
7. power on the LInksys PAP2, plug to power source with right power adaptor, otherwise it'd be damaged.
8. check status lights , power light must be solid blue (just wait), phone lights be solid
9 check for dial tone.
10. make a call to some one.

please notify me if its already working.. Wink

Does your DSL provider require a login (PPPoE or similar)? In other words, do you have to run any special software on your desktop, or log in to to your DSL connection in any way?

yes as a matter of fact I have a login ( or a dialer) if you would say on my desktop which I need to run to connect to DSL,

I only have 1 port on the DSL modem so I can either connect Vonage or I can connect my laptop

Thanks

You'll need to configure the Vonage device to log into your DSL connection. If it is standard PPPoE, then you should just be able to enter your DSL login credentials into the PAP2.

If not (and I don't have a lot of experience with the PAP2), you may need to purchase a router that is compatible with your DSL service. If it is PPPoE, then most routers should be able to log into it.

Another option is to get a second Ethernet card for your laptop (USB or PC Card), and use "Internet Connection Sharing" or a software proxy server to get the PAP2 hanging off your laptop. The bad thing about that configuration is that the Vonage line depends on your laptop being on. The good thing is that the laptop is already connecting, so you know you have a good connection, it's just a matter of routing it to the Vonage adapter.

so as I understand I have 2 options..

1. to make the DSL login free that is no login be required for connecting

2. enter the DSL credential into PAP2 router

I was speaking with the DSL provider and he told me that the internet connection in the DSL modem is always on... from the service provider

I am confused as to what the real issue is..

is there a way I could enter the DSL login stuff into PAP2 router?

Thanks

The PAP2 is intended for use with a router, and as far as I can determine, has no settings to permit establishing a PPPoE connection if that's required. By far your simplest alternative if you want to use the PAP2 in your situation is to get a good router. Alternatively, get rid of the PAP2 and replace it with a Vonage combination router/adapter, like the Motorola VT2442.
