PostPosted: Tue Nov 28, 2006 5:40 pm    Post subject: Newbie Question- Best Wireless Router for me? Reply with quote Back to top

I've had Vonage service for a few months with no complaints. Currently using a VTech IP8100 phone connected to my cable modem. I just bought a new laptop, and I would like to have both of my computers connected to the internet wirelessly. I've never set up a wireless network before, and I want to be sure I own the right hardware so that I don't run into problems getting online or using my Vonage phone.

What is the best router to purchase in my situation? Will I even need the VTech base unit once I purchase a wireless router? I emailed Vonage for suggestions and they recommended the three below, but I've read mixed reviews for all of them.

1. D-Link VWR
2. Linksys WRT54GP2
3. Linksys WRTP54G

Are these my only options? Thanks for the help!

linksys WRTP54G

I have annoyances with D-Link DI-524, which is the DHCP which thinks my laptop's connected to router wirelessly even though it isn't so I had to reset it... Sad My mom can have this for Christmas and I'm buying a Linksys WRTP54G router soon.

Just get a regular router (I like the WRT54GL, paired with aftermarket firmware, but whatever floats your boat), and keep your current Vonage device. Plug the VTech IP8100 into one of the ports of your new router, and off you go.

I already have a WRT54G. It has worked very well for me.

I bought a Vonage device on 12/30, and I got a WRTP54G because it was available with a 100% rebate, whereas the phone adapters were not. Plus, I figured an integrated router/adapter might be able to provide a high QoS for the Vonage packets.

In the short time I've had the setup up and running the WRTP54G has caused me no problems. The WRT54G is powered off (though I have thought about setting it up to extend my WiFi network range, turn off the DHCP is all, right?).

It seems like the general advice is that a WRT54G with a dedicated phone adapter is preferred to a WRTP54G, is that right? I'm willing to pay for a phone adapter (no rebate) if that is considered best. Are there any considerations regarding returning the device I activated my Vonage account with?

Thanks,
Chris

I use a WRTP54G as a dedicated phone adapter. The voice circuitry in the WRTP54G is absolutely first rate, and when I travel I can use it as a router when needed.

I started using my WRTP54G as a router and phone adapter, but its QoS support is really poor, and it has a lot of problems with BitTorrent. So I put a WRT54G V4 in front of it, and just use the Vonage WRTP54G as a voice adapter. Life is good that way.

That sounds like a great setup for me... esp since it uses hw I already have. Very Happy

Did you change any setting on the WRTP54G other than to turn off the wireless?

Thanks.
