PostPosted: Tue Nov 28, 2006 1:15 pm    Post subject: RT31P2 - phone port reset and loss of internet connectivity Reply with quote Back to top

Hello everyone,

I've been a Vonage subscriber for almost 3 years now and have recently begun to have problems with my original RT31P2. The issue is that while on the internet (3 computers hooked up to the router) the phone port 1 (only one in use) will blank out and cause the entire internet connection to quit. Usually, the router responds within the next 10 to 15 seconds and 'resets' the phone port which allows all of my connectivity to be restored.

My questions: Why is this happening & How can I fix it?

I've reset the router several times, rebooted, undone all forwarding/filtering, restored the forwarding/filtering, rebooted the cable modem, and a few other minor things.

The internet connection 'never' goes down unless the phone port blanks out - as soon as I see the tell-tale sign that I've lost internet connectivity (site not responding, games disconnect, etc) I can look at the router and the phone port light is always out. A few seconds later, the light comes back on and instantly I can access the internet again on any computer.

In the admin/setup portion of the router under the phone tab, I can see that the phone is having trouble trying to connect to the service. I'd never noticed this in the past as I've never had the problem.

Thanks in advance for any assistance you can lend.

My device as stated above is getting close to 3 years old. It is the original router than came with the Vonage service.

softflow,
Can you give us the information listed in the sticky thread at the top of the forum, so we may try to narrow it down for you?

softflow the devices especially the rt31p2 has a lifespan of a year,
lucky for you because it went up to 3 years,
but that is just my guess on your situation right now,

try to do this, unplug all the ethernet cables at the back of the Vonage device and just plug in the power cord,
if the power light goes on solid well thats an indication that your device is not fried,
but if the power light is blinking, maybe the device is defective

Thanks for the suggestions thus far. I don't have major problems with the router, only the phone dropping - kicking me offline - restarting cycle is annoying and should be able to be fixed somehow...

Here's the info from the sticky:

Packets out of order: 0.0 %
Number of supported Voip lines: 6
Estimated MOS score: 3.9

I'm in Raleigh, NC and use Time Warner's Roadrunner cable service. I have a Motorola SB5100 Surfboard cable modem. The connection is Modem->Vonage Adapter (RT31P2)->Computer.

My usual down/up speeds are 5mbps and 384kbps respectively.

Thanks again for any assistance.
