Post subject: Slight buzz on Vonage Line only
My
Vonage
line has a buzz which is low enough to be masked by the dial tone but noticeable. I didn't notice it when I first setup my unit so I'm pretty sure its new. I have the Motorola ATA and its attached to my Linksys BEFSR41. Recently I downgraded my Linksys to 1.44z firmware because of an unrelated issue. Could that cause the noise?
The POTS and
Vonage
dial tones sound almost identical. I'm not sure but it seems like the
Vonage
line buzz starts when I press a key rather than being always present.
I replaced all my phone lines when I installed because of a previous issue with cross-talk caused by old wiring so I'm fairly sure its not wiring. The POTS line is noise free.
Thanks

I have the same problem. By changing phones to one that doesn't need a power supply solved my problem.
The problem could be caused by any device in your network that has a AC to DC power supply including the Motorola's own power supply.

Thanks Krautdog, I think you hit this one on the head. The phone can either be powered by batteries or a power supply so I'll try the batteries route.

The Motorola ATA has the wrong type of power supply. It is a switched mode one and it throws a lot of interference out on the phone lines. The longer the phone line that you connect to it is, the more hum you will get. The lines are not balanced, so will pick up external interference as well, but that does not seem to be your problem. Likewise the power supply interfiernce wil leak to phones that have their own powersupply and result in noise. Replace the power supply by a simple old fashioned transformer one (12VDC, check polarity) and the hum will likely be gone.
