Hope someone can help! I utilize Charter Pipline for my internet service (St. Louis, MO). I have had Vonage now for about 6 months. I have a Linksys BEFCMU10 Cable Modem with a Linksys WRTP54G for my Vonage line with one phone line installed. I have a Panasonic phone (2 cordless) hooked up to the router. I also have a Dell laptop that I configured to work as wireless with its internal WiFi.
When I first set up Vonage everything was fine. Now, I am experiencing very degraded speeds for download and upload on my internet browser. I have Charter's 3mb service for download and 256 kb upload. My internet tests show 756kb download and 76 kb upload. Additionally, I have very degraded audio. Someone on the other end cannot hear me or the audio is very choppy and broken up. Sometimes I cannot even get a dial tone and have to reboot the router and cable modem.
I cannot figure out what is wrong, but from reading other posts, it appears to be the WRTP54G.
I have disabled wireless and it seems to help a little but doesn't get me to 3mb or 256kb by any means. I am ready to go back to Charter telephone service!
I have contacted both Vonage, Linksys and Charter for tech help. Each blames the other. I have the most updated firmware on my router and I even purchased a new Linksys cable modem.
Additionally, if it makes any difference, this all started when I received and automatic update from Microsoft of IE7. I scanned for viruses, malware and did not find a thing. I use AVG Anti-Virus with a firewall, Windows Defender and Ad-Aware.
Any help would be appreciated!
I like Vonage but do not have the patience to deal with this problem at all.

I have the same problem and I have the same internet provider and services as you do (Charter with 3 meg down and 256 up) and your speeds are much easier on the eyes then mine are... which I ran speed tests at dslreports.com and speakeasy.net and I ranged from 80 down and around 100 up which really ****! I think Charter is to blame because it was working perfectly fine one day then bam it **** the next. But I can not say with 100% certainty that it is Charter because pings and everything else works just fine. But why so horrible rates? I called Charter and all Charter does is blame Vonage for sucking up all the upload which causes my connection to bog but later today I will call Vonage to see wha the hell they will say.

Internet Service Provider
Charter Communications

Pipeline
3meg Down and 256Kb UP

Router
WRTP54G

Vonage with One Phone Port Active

2 Computers Wired and 1 Computer Wireless

Browsing Incredibly slow... gaming EVEN SLOWER!

Mad0Maxx:
Thanks for the input. I really think that it is the router. Everything that I see out there on the web directs me to that (when I can get on the internet) but........as you said, why would it stop working "all of a sudden"? Just doesn't make any sense. When I talked to Charter, they seemed to be pretty honest about it because all of the pings, etc. came back fine. We tried 2 different sites for the speed test. I got the same results plugged into the router and modem as I did just through the modem only. A little improvement through the modem only but not much.
I have my tech guy (from work) coming to my home on Wednesday and will let you know what he finds. My configuration sounds just like yours though.
Are there any other solutions out there other than Vonage?

sokolich,

to make your assertion absolutely true, you should run the test with your computer connected directly to your modem and take the Vonage router out of the equation.

If you speed tests are still subpar, you have just demonstrated that it is not the Vonage router.

If you speed tests are back to the advertised 256 up and 3M down, then you are correct in blaming the Vonage adapter.

However, if you keep testing with the Vonage adapter in your configuration, you have proven very little.
