PostPosted: Sun Nov 26, 2006 8:20 pm    Post subject: Re-use of Linksys WRTP54G Wireless-G Reply with quote Back to top

Hello forum members, request your help please.

I have a Linksys WRTP54G Wireless-G Broadband Router for Vonage Internet Phone Service.

As I do not need a wireless router and would like to gift it to my cousin who has a Voip phone from sunrocket.

I have a few questions:

1) Can I purchase another less expensive router and have the same Vonnage number? How difficult will it be to re-configure the new set up.

2) Can my exisiting wireless router be configured for use with other Voip providers?

3) Can my cousin use this router only for wireless connection along with her Sunrocket gizmo. (just to connect her laptop wirelessly)

If this is possible how can she connect it?

Thanks very much in advance.

Yes, you can. It shouldn't be a problem. Just register the new unit with Vonage. You can do that on the web site. Then switch your number to that unit on the website. Naturally, you'll have to set the unit up in your network. Since you handled the WRTP54G, you shouldn't have problems with other Vonage compatible units.

Technically, yes. Whether the other provider will permit it is up to them. If you were bringing another provider's unit to Vonage, the answer would be no, they won't permit it.

Yes. She should probably set it up just the way you did in your network. The only difference is that she won't get phone service from it after you switch yours to the new unit. It will act like a plain wireless router. Get the laptop on line and connect the Sunrocket gizmo to the laptop.

Thank you Steve, for your quick reply. It indeed helped me to make a decision.

My cousin can connect this wireless router to her phone router and then she can go wireless!

Is this the sequence to be followed:

Connect Cable Modem to sunrocket 'gizmo', then the gizmo to the linksys WRTP54G router and she will be good to go?

Do let me know if this is okay. Thank you once again for your help.

I would think that the setup you indicated would work, but I have a question for Steve: Do you think the old device, no longer being used as a telephone adapter, will still attempt to "phone home" for firmware updates, and thus possibly cause problems in the new network?

yes you may, you just have to do a retail activation on the website to activate the new device

2) Can my exisiting wireless router be configured for use with other Voip providers?

nope you cant use that device for other Voip companies, you can use it as a router

3) Can my cousin use this router only for wireless connection along with her Sunrocket gizmo. (just to connect her laptop wirelessly)

yes but remember the device will only act as a router not a Voip phone adapted

If this is possible how can she connect it?

connect the device to the yellow port of the Vonage device

answers is from me...
hihi

Dave, that's an interesting question that I hadn't thought about. I suppose it will try, but since the Vonage system won't accept it, I don't think any updates will actually occur. If that's the case, the occasional "call home" shouldn't be an issue.

I wonder if the telephone functions can just be shut off?

Hmmm, interesting. I wonder if you can somehow use the firewall that's in the router to block any comms with vonage.com or any of the update servers. This way, then you could have a solution to use a locked adapter as a router after one leaves Vonage. My fear is that it will constantly be trying to go home, and upload bandwidth will suffer.

If you are just looking to use the WRTP54G as a wireless access point, then simply turn off DHCP and don't use the WAN port. That way, the Vonage side of the device doesn't get Internet access, and the router is acting as a dumb switch and wireless access point. No routing, no Vonage, no problem. Wink

That is, assuming the Sunrocket device can handle giving out multiple local IP addresses, which it should.
